Pizza Time Boca Raton

For an ex-New Yorker, South Florida has long been home of the Worst Pizza.  But indisputably, Pizza Time of Coral Springs, FL has stood out tall as being unlike the competition.  There pizza isn’t  good, it is GREAT. They brought a second location to Parkland, FL.  I am not sure if they were connected by the same owners, or family, or if it was just a similar name, but the Pizza Time in Parkland is also very good.  So it was with delight that Mrs. Pizza informed me, that in my very own hometown of Boca Raton Florida, at the location of a former Sal’s Pizza near The Fresh Market, she saw the following sign: Coming Soon, Pizza Time of Coral Springs.

Immediately after they opened the staff here at worst pizza dot com rushed for an early review.  This Pizza Time was a lot smaller than the other two, and did in fact look like the ubiquitous Sal’s Pizzas that seem to be on every corner.  But the comparison ends there!  There was a nice crowd of people, and a great selection of pizza’s to choose from.  In deference to my guest, Pizza Expert, we ordered a nice fresh hot Sicilian pie.  While we waited, we both asked ourselves the same question and finally had to discuss the issue.  What was that noise?  The Pizza Man was yelling; at everyone and no one in particular, making it a not so pleasant environment to be around.  It was hysterical, and actually a bit disturbing that he would treat his staff this way.  The place wasn’t that busy and he was just barking out orders at his staff.  I had to ask the waitress for the scoop.  Apparently, Bob, the owner, was the owner of the Coral Springs location (I am not sure about Parkland).  There he gathered the reputation as being a Pizza Knotzie.  He retired but was driving himself crazy. So when this joint became available he bought it.

OK.  Whatever.  He may be loud, but he makes good pizza.  When our pizza came, we couldn’t get enough of it.  I never ate as much Sicilian in one sitting.  It was very, very good.  However, the finish was a little cakey.  A Great Sicilian, although thick, is light as air.  Not spongy.  Still, the Sicilian gets 6 out of 8 slices.  I am looking forward to going back to the Pizza Time of Boca Raton for more, and to try the regular pizza (and the rest of the menu).

Perrinis Pizza Boca Raton

Mrs. Pizza took Pizza Boy to a birthday party Saturday.  The hosts ordered from Perrini’s Pizzeria & Ristorante on 441 in Boca Greens, Boca Raton, FL  (561)488-4371.  Mrs. Pizza did not care for it.    She thought it was doughy and lacked taste.

As I have discussed in previous posts, often pizza arrives at a birthday party cold, and sometimes appears that the pizzeria didn’t put as much care into the pizza as they normally do.  This is what I think happened today.  In their rush to get the pizza out the door, this wonderful little restaurant did not cook the pizza’s through.  This lack of caring is a problem many restaurants face, and may be exacerbated by Perrini’s birthday party special (5 or more pies for $8.99 each).

Since I happened to be in that very same shopping center with Pizza Jr. (my daughter), we decided that we have some pizza for lunch.  Perrini’s is often regarded by some of the locals out in western Boca Raton as the best around.  I didn’t particularly notice it before, and haven’t been there in a while, so I was excited to see if the locals had any merit to their opinions.   The restaurant was very busy, so we sat at a small plastic table outside.  We ordered from the waitress who was very pleasant even though they were crushed.  Our pizza was very good, hot and fresh from the oven.  So Perrini’s gets 5 out of 8 slices (a good score from me).  You would do well to eat here if you are in the area.  Just make sure to eat it fresh.

Mario The Baker Opens Pizza Joint in Boca Raton

After hearing that Mario The Baker opened up in Boca Raton, my son and I immediately headed over there.  Mario opened his latest pizza place in the former spot that Cousin Wowie’s used to be in, and before that it was some other pizza place.  For some reason, restaurants do not seem to last very long in this spot, even with the K-Mart anchor.

Mario The Baker seems to be smarter then the previous tenants, and only chose to take half of the previous location.  The other half has some type of Ice Cream place moving in.  When my son and I arrived, during regular business hours, we were quite surprised with how few people were eating there.  Besides us, there were only 2 other tables full.  If you listened to the yenta sitting at the table in front of us and closed your eyes, you would have imagined the place was packed.

The place smelled delicious and had a nice clean feeling to it.  The staff was great & attentive, and it was nice to see that the family who owned this Mario The Baker location were all present, including their cute little baby.  We ordered a plain pie and some Garlic Knots or Garlic Rolls.  I forget what they call them down here, since they change from place to place.  When the pizza arrived we were pleased with the presentation.  My son took the first slice and bit into it and seemed happy enough, so I proceeded to bite into my own.  The taste was nice.  The cheese was of a definite quality, but the sauce lacked a bit of taste.  The crust was a bit soggy, and not as crisp as it should be, based upon the thinness of it.  Don’t get me wrong, the crust had a decent taste to it, but I would rather them crisp it up a bit more, which could be accomplished by lowering the oven just a tad.

It is hard not to want to see a place like this suceed.  The owners family were so plesant and came over to talk with us to make sure everything was ok.  As we left a huge basketball party arrived and the place filled up quickly.  I will give Mario The Baker in Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices, and will be trying it again soon to see if they correct the crust.

Eat Augys Pizza In Boca Raton Only When Hot

Yesterday we couldn’t decide where to eat.  The “we” consisted of Eric, Alexahente and Myself.  Since they had never been to Augy’s Pizza by their office, I decided to suggest it.  As you can see by my previous reviews of Augy’s, I happen to enjoy their Sicilian Style pizza.

Although I found it totally repulsive that they have a lunch buffet with pizza sitting out on the counter, with nothing covering it, and a bunch of people breathing and coughing as they grab slices, I decided I wouldn’t let that get in the way of my hunger.  Boy, I wish I did though!  Wonder when the department of health will cease this buffet!

Here is the problem with having a lunch buffet…If you do not have the turn around, the pizza sits there and gets cold.  The slices I originally grabbed were gross.  The sauce was cold, the dough was chewy, and the cheese certainly lost any quality that I might have previously spoken of.  Augy’s you have truly disappointed me.  I have recommended your establishment to countless people who ask me where to get a good pie, and this is how I get repaid?  Cold Pizza.

Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the pizza guy taking something smoking hot out of the oven, and I naturally was praying it would be a Sicilian.  Slowly I walked up to the counter and was overjoyed to see it was.  I grabbed a couple of slices and sat down, and finally got the taste that Augy’s has kept me coming back for.  My advice to anyone going to Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton:  ONLY EAT THEIR PIZZA WHEN HOT.  If it cools down, ask them to reheat it.  Their pizza loses all quality when it cools down for some odd reason.  Best bet is to just order a fresh pie even during lunch and skip the buffet.

I will give Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices, but they should only get 4 for my first slices.

Dominic’s Pizza II Boca Raton and Rotelli In One Weekend

Went to another birthday party Saturday with my four year old son.  The party started at 1:30, so naturally pizza was served at 2:45.  I have been known to have an extra meal or 2, but was unsure exactly why we were eating pizza and cake at 2:45.

Yes Some Parents Go Out Of Their Way To Get Costco Pizza in Boca Raton

Back on the birthday party circuit with this review.  Went to a party with my son the other day at a park, where the host had about a dozen or so pizza pies from Costco!  Yes, I said Costco Pizza.  Anyone who has visited Costco before probably knows they have extremely cheap food, and one of the main things they serve is pizza.

Although the price of the pizza currently slips my mind, I am sure it is cheaper then regular places.  Usually cheaper prices, means cheaper ingredients.  It is hard to judge pizza that has been picked up and sitting around outside in the humidity, but, being the expert I am, I was able to put together a pizza review.

The pie was a decent size, but the crust was a little too puffy, and chewy.  The sauce wasn’t put on too heavy, which is a good thing since the sauce wasn’t exactly gourmet.  The cheese was alright, and they used a generous amount of it.  All together the pie just didn’t taste like a regular pizza should, but for Costco, and for sitting out as long as it had it wasn’t nearly as dreadful as a place like Peace a Pizza in Boca Raton.

My curiosity as to why the host got Costco pizza is more of what I am concerned with.  Costco in Boca Raton is not conveniently located in the center of town.  So if you live to the west or south in Boca, you have to travel miles to get there.  With the price of gas being almost $4.00 a gallon, is it worth having to travel up to 10 miles out of your way to get Costco pizza to save a few bucks.  Doesn’t the cost of actually getting it, outweigh the savings?

To any parents reading this, or anyone in general who is thinking of throwing a party and ordering pizza from Costco, you should really consider if it is pretty much the same price to order from a quality place that delivers, and might discount the price if you buy in bulk.  Places like Casa L’Italien and Dominic’s in Boca Raton are much finer choices. Rumors even have it that Nino’s Pizza will soon be delivering!!  I will give Costco Pizza in Boca Raton 3 out of 8 slices.

Giovanni’s Pizza Boca Raton – Oregano Overload

I would like to have a lunch mulligan, or a do-over for today’s lunch.  We headed to Giovanni’s for a deep dish pizza.  I am a NY style guy, but can appreciate the Chicago style from time to time.  I loved my times in Chicago when I had great pies at places like Pizzeria Uno (The Original), Gino’s with the walls that you can write on and the hidden gem Home Run pizza on the South side.  This pizza today was a slap in the face of the greats I just mentioned.  The sauce was tart and way chunky.  The oregano that was on the top of the pie was grossly over poured and left it tasting like the dirty spice rack at the Franco American Corporation.

The word Oregano is derived from the Greek words for “joy of the mountains.”  I found no joy in the flattest part of the flattest state in America. (The highest point in Florida is Britton Hill, Lakewood Park in Walton County and is only 345 feet above sea level.)

I did find Oregano!

As you can see from the picture there are 2 slices left.  We did not get them to go and it was not that I could not finish them as much as I did not want to finish them.  The place was also on the skanky side, and the bathroom was on the side of the building like a gas station off the highway.  I recommend eating the road kill you can readily find on the side of any road in S. FL. over this horrible thing they called a pizza.  After I wiped the oregano and sauce off the pizza it was still not even close to fair.

2 Slices out of 8 and that is being nice.  They even had some award for best pizza on the wall.  I will be conducting my own investigation on the source of this award.

Whole Foods Market Boca Raton Better Then Publix Greenwise Pizza

Found myself at Barnes & Nobles the other day looking for a book that was recommended to me called The Starfish and The Spider.  Two stores down in Boca Raton is Whole Foods Market.  I walked over to try to find lunch and my pizza radar led me to the back left section of the store, where I found the pizza oven.

Whole Foods has one of these new beautiful ovens set back with a fancy facade.  Their oven looked pretty similar to the one found at that dreaded Publix Greenwise market.  I ordered a couple of slices and sat down to eat them at the store.

Although this pizza certainly was a “whole” lot of money, it wasn’t worth the price.  Quality wise, I would certainly pick this pizza over the crap they are serving at Publix Greenwise in Boca Raton, but if you are in the mood for a decent slice, at a decent price, this is not the place.

Here is the problem:  The cheese had a certain tang to it, and although I do not doubt they are using fresh and quality ingredients, maybe the fancy healthy cheese they use actually doesn’t blend well with their sauce, which leads me to to discuss the sauce mixture.  Their sauce almost tasted like straight tomatoes (which I hate the taste of).  There was nothing sweet or tasty about it, and almost bland.  Where it wasn’t bland it was almost spicy.  Not sure how you can have zero taste in some spots, and over spicy in others, but obviously you are not applying your seasoning with care.

My visit to Whole Foods in Boca Raton leads me back to previous posts I have made here regarding fancy equipment.  Don’t waste your time on these expensive ovens, if you are going to put quality pizza into them.  If you put crap in, you will get crap out, regardless of the amount of money you spend on the oven.  I will give Whole Foods Market in Boca Raton 2 out of 8 slices.

Boca Raton Ale House Pizza

Let me just start by saying the Boca Raton Ale House isn’t known for pizza, and is actually a great place to go and watch the games.  Went there yesterday with my son to meet Big G and Keith, and watch some football.  This Boca Raton Ale House is located on 1200 Yamato Rd
Boca Raton, FL 33431 (561) 988-9142 Phone.

When my son asked me if he could get a pizza from the kids menu, I of course obliged.  Why not watch the games and review pizza at the same time.  What a beautiful combination!

When the pizza came, it looks half way decent, and was certainly hot.  I am going to try and be fair to this pizza since it isn’t on the regular menu and is only available for kids, but none the less, since it is on a menu it needs to be reviewed.  The dough was undercooked, but the top was nice and hot.  The sauce had an ok taste to it, and all in all I was able to finish it.  I guess this pizza could be compared to Subway Pizza, or Pizza Hut.  It is better then Peace a Pizza located in the same shopping center, and comparable to Subway.

Definitely do not go out of your way to eat pizza there, but if you happen to be there and want to try a slice of your childs pizza, you won’t be totally disappointed either.  The top of the pizza is quite hot so do not let your little ones bite into it!  The Boca Ale House in Boca Raton gets 3 out of 8 slices.

Bogart’s Pizza at Muvico in Boca Raton

Finally had a chance to go out with the wife alone on a sort of “date” the other night. We went to go see the movie Burn After Reading, which was playing at the Muvico Palace 20 in Boca Raton.

The movie was decent, but we were starving after it ended, and since Boca Raton doesn’t have much in the offering of places to eat after midnight, it didn’t look promising. When we were about to leave the Muvico Palace, we realized that this location has a full restaurant and bar upstairs, where you would enter for the Premier Seating section. This section is also known as the Lexus Premier Level.

Bogart’s, which is a Rapoport’s Restaurant, opened within the past year or so. I figured this would be the same kind of food which is served at the concession stand, so my hopes for a decent meal were not promising. When I saw pizza on the menu, I figured it would only be right to try a slice from a new place. Obviously, I knew I wouldn’t be happy with it, since it was 12:30am, and once again I was at a movie theater.

When the pizza came out, I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance. When I took my first bite, I was in shock. The pizza was actually pretty damn good. It was super thin, and crispy, with tasty sauce (not too heavy) and some quality tasting cheese. The pie was cooked perfectly and was hot when served. I managed to finish the whole individual pie.

Bogart’s, you managed to make me actually want to come back again. This is not something I normally say about pizza, especially when I was prepared for the worst. If you can consistently serve the quality and consistency of the pizza I had the other night, I might even come there without seeing a movie! I will give Bogart’s in the Muvico, in Boca raton 6 out of 8 slices.
