Umberto’s Pizza of Long Island in Deerfield Beach

Let me start by saying one of my favorite pizza places back home was Umberto’s Pizza of New Hyde Park.  They had several location and I used to frequent the one in Huntington on Jericho Turnpike, the one where they owners son Guy used to work.  The Sicilian was PHENOMENAL and was always consistent!  When I moved to Florida I used to crave this pizza and the second I would land out in Long Island I would go and grab a slice there.

Sal’s Pizza in Boca Raton – Home of the pizza that didn’t show up

Gary and I went to Sal’s Pizza today wanting to try the Sicilian Pizza together.  Figuring the pie would take a while to make we got a sub to hold us over.  So our order was precisely this….Meatball Hero and a Sicilian pie.  We were in total shock when we finished and the waiter said “do you want anything on your pizza, or just cheese (another complaint to address again later).  We asked why he is asking since we ordered it about 20 minutes prior.

Casa L’Italien Boca Raton

Casa Box

Was playing poker the other night with Billy (of course ended up as a winner) and the guys ordered in pizza from Casa L’Italien pizza in Boca Raton again.  We like getting the pizza from there cause it is usually pretty consistent.  I ordered from Brooklyn Boys Pizza in Boca Raton a couple of times as well but they are totally ridiculous with their delivery prices to this neighborhood.

Upon opening the pizza box I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the presentation of this pizza was.  The cheese and sauce had a perfect ration and it was just begging me to eat it.  The slice itself was good and I would certainly not say anything about the taste, but the bottom of the pie wasn’t cooked well enough and was very soggy.  Since we ordered well done, you would think they at least would take the time to cook it normally instead of under cooking.  Their cheese is very good, and I think we will order from this place regularly still.  Casa l’Italien Pizza in Boca Raton gets 5 out of 8 slices.

Zuccarelli’s Italian Kitchen West Palm Beach – Not The Worst Pizza

The other day I went over to my next door neighbors house, you remember them, the ones with absolutely ZERO taste for quality pizza.  The grandparents were there, and recommended a place in West Palm Beach called Zuccarelli’s.  On Sunday I was up around the West Palm Beach area and searched my mental rolodex of pizza places I have heard of, when I recalled them saying Zuccarelli’s.  Since my family and I were down the block we went to try it out.  Man am I happy I did.  We ordered a Sicilian pie and it was definitely one of the best I have had down in Florida.  The cheese was incredible and tasty, it had just the perfect amount of sauce and they managed to make the crust crispy, while keeping the inside inside soft & yet well cooked…for lack of having a better description come into my head.  I cannot wait to go back and try the regular pizza.  One thing I would have while dining there are the garlic rolls.  They are extremely bland and not worth paying for.  I will give Zuccarelli’s in West Palm Beach 6 out of 8 slices, and will certainly make it a point to frequent this pizza place any time I am around that area!

Cannoli Kitchen Boca Raton Florida Frozen Pizza

cannoli kitchen sicilian

Went with Jim to Cannoli Kitchen on Federal Highway in Boca Raton for some Pizza Saturday.  I have eaten at Cannoli Kitchen dozens of times, and I never understood why this place (like every other place) is rated #1.  Sometimes I wish the magazines or newspapers giving out these (what seems like paid for) reviews would consult with me…..for free!

Sal’s Pizza Boca Raton

sal\'s

After being totally disappointed with both Rotelli Pizza and Peace a Pizza by my office, I tried Sal’s Pizza here in Boca Raton on the corner of Yamato Road and Congress.  You can read my previous review of a different Sal’s Pizza here.  This Sal’s Pizza of Boca Raton is located on 861 Yamato road and is near the Wendy’s.

For starters when I am served a slice of pizza with a bubble in it, I instantly know the pizza maker didn’t have any real care about how the pie looks or taste, or he would have popped them during a spin in the oven.  The pizza was served to us overbearingly hot, and was extremely well done.  Normally I would deduct points for this, but amazingly the pizza crust held firm the entire time and didn’t sag making for one of the most enjoyable crispy experiences in recent times.

The taste wasn’t anything overwhelming, however for some reason everything seemed just fine.  Maybe it was by pure luck that this Sal’s tasted good, since obviously they put no effort into the appearance of the slice, nor the time they cooked it.  Will venture back there again soon and hopefully they will not pull a Rotelli on me!  I will give ths Sal’s Pizza of Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices!

As a side note, I have never seen such TINY meatballs in my life!  When your meatballs are smaller then the bubbles in your pizza you should ask yourself…….Are my meatballs too small, or are the bubbles in my pizza too big?

Subway Boca Raton – Yes I said Subway as in Sandwich Shop

Subwaysubway2

I am hesitant to post this, since I never want to be judged based upon this kind of pizza, but every pizza deserves its day on this site.  So yesterday I went to the same shopping center Rotelli Pizza is located in and of course drove right by since my last experience wasn’t so good.  There also happens to be a Subway in this shopping center (by the tri-rail station on Yamato Road in Boca Raton).  I went into Subway to get a sandwich and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw they sell individual pizzas now!  For $3.99 I could get a small pizza perfect for lunch time.  It is hard to compare this type of 1 minute ready pizza to a normal pizza place so the only places I can compare this Subway pizza to is Dunkin Donuts and Pizza Hut type of places (which sadly I have also eaten).  Subway pizza is much better then these other places, and knowing Subway, their pizza is probably healthier.  I am not suggesting to go run out and get one of these individual pizzas, but if you happen to be at Subway and you notice they have pizza there, you might want to try it.  I will give Subway 2 out of 8 slices, considering I would give the other places that serve individual lunch pizzas zero.

Rotelli Pizza & Pasta Boca Raton

I said in my previous post about Rotelli Pizza in Boca Raton by the tri rail on Yamato Road, that I would certainly be going back to try again and make sure they are consistent, and I went the other night to keep my word. Oh Rotelli, Rotelli, how disappointed was I to learn that it was a one time tasty deal. The pizza I had the other night was absolutely nothing like the pizza I had during my previous article about you.

Rotelli Pizza Boca Raton – Worth another slice

Rotelli

Here is something you have not seen me do lately, and that is actually say I was pleased with a recent experience!  My next door neighbor loves Rotteli, and have always had mixed feelings about the chain.  It is a franchise but the quality and taste of stuff from location to location is far from the same.  The pizza at Rotelli in West Delray Beach tastes substantially different then the crappy pizza at the Rotelli in Central Boca Raton.  Since my neighbor swears by the one that I think is awful, it was hard for me to keep an open mind the first time we tried the new Rotelli by the Tri Rail station.  So naturally I didn’t like it.

Keith and I decided to venture there yesterday and try out the food.  When the pizza came, it was hot, gooey, crispy and perfectly thin.  If I didn’t order a sandwich for my main dish I would have probably had 3 more slices.  Maybe this was just a good day for Rotelli, but compared to the crap I have eaten that tries to pass itself as pizza, Rotelli was a pleasant surprise for my taste buds.  I will give Rotelli in Boca Raton by the Tri-Rail station 5 out of 8 slices, and will certainly be going back to try again and make sure they are consistent.
