Nino’s Pizza Boca Raton

Reviewed By Matt

People who aren’t from New York often don’t understand what we-new-Yorkers are complaining about when we eat pizza in south Florida.

For those people, I say go to Nino’s Pizza in Boca Raton. The pizza at Nino’s would be considered average in New York.  You could get this pizza anywhere.  But here in Boca Raton, Florida this pizza is it!!! The sauce is not too acidic, the cheese tastes good and the crust is the right level of thickness.  Any less is a cracker, any more is bread.

The food here is wonderful as well.  Probably the best chicken parm. I have had in Florida.  I once had lunch here 4 days in 1 week, had a different lunch every time, and was happy with each.

They do take credit cards, but not Amex.  I don’t have a problem with that.  But they do not deliver.  If you
are looking for the worst pizza in Florida, do not go to Nino’s.  6 out of 8 slices.

Publix Greenwise Pizza Boca Raton – Be Wise Stay Away

A new Publix Greenwise opened up in Boca Raton last month.  During my initial trip there, I noticed they had a new Pizza Oven and a Pizza Maker……which I took a mental picture of.

After trying to decide what to eat with Mikey (my son) last night, I recalled my mental picture and decided to try out Publix Greenwise Pizza.  This surely was not one of my better decisions!

As you can see by the above photo, I ordered a plain pizza, which I was quickly asked by the “pizza pro” behind the counter “you mean a cheese?”  I reluctantly answered yes, I would like a plain pizza, and if you want to add cheese that would be great.  After ordering I was handed a buzzer to alert me when my pizza was ready (which isn’t a terrible idea, so I could shop).  After feeling something in my pocket that led me to believe I stepped into an eltro-charged puddle, I realized my pizza must be ready.

I rushed over to the pizza counter and took my pizza proudly over to the booths to eat.  Upon opening this pizza my son said “dad, this looks like Pizza Hut pizza, and I don’t even think Pizza Hut is really Pizza.” My first bite was putrid, and so was each consecutive bite.  The sauce was way too spicy, the cheese did not taste fresh, and had zero quality.  I handed Mikey a slice, and he couldn’t even hold down the first bite.  It was nearly impossible to say if the crust tasted good, as the repulsive sauce had already seeped into it.

Publix, initially I was pretty impressed with the pizza oven you installed in the store, and I had high hopes that you would actually use it for something good.  Why would you waste all this money on the oven and use crap ingredients?    Here is what I would do to improve this pizza.

  1. Throw away the recipe and start again
  2. Use a basic, sweet tasting smooth sauce
  3. Switch cheeses to Grande
  4. Turn the oven a bit hotter so things bake differently

For now I am giving Publix Greenwise Market in Boca Raton 0 out of 8 slices.  If you are looking for this kind of pizza, I would recommend going to Subway, or even Papa Johns instead.  Do not be fooled by the fact that they use a good oven here, if you put crap into an expensive oven, all you will get out is baked crap!

Gatsby’s Boca Raton

Reviewed by Matt

I didn’t go to Gatsby’s for the pizza.  It’s a bar and a pool hall.  The foods good, but I am a pizza purist.  No Califonia Pizza Kitchens for me, no fancy toppings, I like a good old fashioned slice.

However, on Thursday nights, all their pizza’s are $4.  I went there recently and we dug in.  The pizzas were good!!!  It’s dark inside so the picture did not come out so well, but I enjoyed the pizza.  Better than most places in Boca Raton, FL. A nice size, easily feeds 2 people, and you can’t lose for $4.  I give Gatsby’s Pizza in Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices since for $4 I am not finding this elsewhere!

Renzo’s Pizza of Boca Raton

Ed Note.  This is the first post from SCOTT another new writer we have here at worstpizza!

This is my first post for worst pizza, but I have been a follower since the origination of the web site. I have based my pizza dining experience on the recommendations from this site. I hope my experience will help others in finding the best possible pie in our area during their future visits. Last night I attended Lenny’s poker game where I was pleasantly surprised to see that we ordered from Renzo’s Pizza. I have heard positive feedback from previous friends who have eaten at Renzo’s Pizza in Boca Raton. I had 2 slices of regular and 1 slice of pepperoni. The first thing I noticed was that the pizza had a nice thin, crisp crust, which is something I look for in my pie’s. Nobody wants to pick up a slice and have it fall apart! I was surprised after my first bite that the pizza was piping hot and had a delicious taste. This is hard to find from a delivered pizza. The sauce was not over barring and had a nice cheese to sauce ratio. My only knock on the pie was it was a little oily. I personally enjoyed the plain over the pepperoni  but this generally holds true for me most of the time. Overall I enjoyed the Renzo’s pizza, especially since I am not a big fan on delivery pies. I look forward to dining at Renzo’s as I am curious to see how much better the pizza is when I get to sink my teeth into a slice straight from the oven. I give the pizza 5/8 slices.

Big City Pizza Boca Raton

big city

After finding out from Gary at the last minute that I was alone for lunch yesterday, I got in my car and headed over to Big City Pizza in Boca Raton, off Yamato Road.  We will get to the actual review of the pizza later on but for now, I want to focus on the 2 excellent features Big City Pizza has going for itself.  It is hard to say anything bad about a place that has these positive things.

  1. They actually use the words GARLIC KNOTS on their menu!  This is quite comforting for me since that is what they are.  Most of the dumber places around this state refer to them as Garlic Rolls.
  2. You might find this shocking, but this place actually let me order my pizza, and get this….bring it back to the table myself without having to have some waiter/waitress carry it the 4 steps for me!

Now back to the pizza!

I ordered 1 Sicilian slice and one Regular slice.  Both came out nice and hot.  The Regular slice was pretty big and was crispy on the bottom, but I just wasn’t into it.  I think it was the sauce.  The sauce just didn’t seem to be perfect.  On the other hand the Sicilian was wonderful.  I am not sure if it is consistently this good, but I wish I had ordered 2 Sicilian slices instead of the regular one.  The cheese/sauce ratio was perfect, and each bite tasted delicious.  Originally I thought I had trained myself to want to like this place since they had Garlic Knots and no servers + the guy behind the counter was pretty cool, but this pizza was good.  Now, if it is consistently good is another story.  Obviously I will be going back to do a spot check, but for now I feel comfortable saying this was one of the better Sicilians I have personally had down here.  Let’s hope they do not disappoint me like Sal’s or Rotelli in Boca Raton.  I give Big City Pizza in Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices for the Sicilian.

Einstein Bros Bagel Pizza Boca Raton

The family and I missed our train to Miami the other day and we got hungry.  We walked across the street to see what we could eat and found Einstein Bros Bagel shop.  I originally wasn’t going to get anything to eat but when I looked up at the menu and noticed they make Pizza Bagels, I figured it was worth a try.  Obviously, we must all remember that we are not talking about a regular pizza joint here and rather just reviewing a bagel place that puts sauce and cheese on top of them.

Augy’s Pizza Boca Raton

Before going to my meeting at the design firm yesterday, I decided to meet Jim for lunch at Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton.  Augy’s pizza has been around for many many years here in Boca Raton, but recently changed owners.  It still has the original taste though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the previous owners staff were still employed there.

Sal’s Pizza in Boca Raton – Home of the pizza that didn’t show up

Gary and I went to Sal’s Pizza today wanting to try the Sicilian Pizza together.  Figuring the pie would take a while to make we got a sub to hold us over.  So our order was precisely this….Meatball Hero and a Sicilian pie.  We were in total shock when we finished and the waiter said “do you want anything on your pizza, or just cheese (another complaint to address again later).  We asked why he is asking since we ordered it about 20 minutes prior.

Casa L’Italien Boca Raton

Casa Box

Was playing poker the other night with Billy (of course ended up as a winner) and the guys ordered in pizza from Casa L’Italien pizza in Boca Raton again.  We like getting the pizza from there cause it is usually pretty consistent.  I ordered from Brooklyn Boys Pizza in Boca Raton a couple of times as well but they are totally ridiculous with their delivery prices to this neighborhood.

Upon opening the pizza box I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the presentation of this pizza was.  The cheese and sauce had a perfect ration and it was just begging me to eat it.  The slice itself was good and I would certainly not say anything about the taste, but the bottom of the pie wasn’t cooked well enough and was very soggy.  Since we ordered well done, you would think they at least would take the time to cook it normally instead of under cooking.  Their cheese is very good, and I think we will order from this place regularly still.  Casa l’Italien Pizza in Boca Raton gets 5 out of 8 slices.
