Modern Pizza New Rochelle, NY
While visiting with a client in New Rochelle, we were taken to Modern pizza. This establishment appeared to have been an original eatery in this city, located to the north of Manhattan in Westchester County. Upon further study of their website, I learned that they have been serving up quality pizza since 1920!
Modern Pizza is not associated with Modern APizza in New haven, I made the same mistake myself when we first pulled up alongside this inconspicuously located pizza shop. Although the interior might fool you like you are in one of those New Haven places, you most definitely are not.

Amici’s Pizza Coconut Creek Florida
Amici’s is a place I am upset I didn’t discover sooner then I did. If you have not tried Amici’s Pizza in Coconut Creek yet, you really need to get over there to try some of their pizza out. This is one of those places, with owners who get it. They are actively involved daily and actually care about the pie they put out. Enough about them, let’s focus on the pizza for now.

Talia’s Tuscan Table Pizza Boca Raton, FL
Talia’s Tuscan Table in Boca Raton recently won best Italian Restaurant in Palm Beach County from the New Times, and to thank everyone who voted for them, they had a customer appreciation day and offered out free food for anyone who attended. Yes that is right, to show their thanks, they actually let their customers know they are appreciated and offered FREE food. Countless numbers of other places could benefit from being generous like this around South Florida.
I didn’t recall what Talia’s pizza tasted like, since it had been years since I have ventured into this place. The shopping center Talia’s sits in, is pretty gross and initially I stopped going there after the original owner sold Talia’s to someone who ran it into the ground, and I got reports of a rodent problem in the strip mall to top it off.

LOLA Pizza or Wood Roasted Flatbread Delray Beach, FL
Haven’t traveled back to South Florida for a few months, and when I went up to try one of my old favorite places Gotham, I realized it had changed names and was now called LOLA. LOLA is owned by the same lady who owns Cucina Mio in the same shopping center. Cucina Mio used to be called Cucina Rosano, and it has consistently been one of the better Italian joints around town.

Scarfones Coal Fired Pizza Coconut Creek
The other day I headed over to meet my co-worker for lunch in the Coconut Creek Promenade at Scarfones Coal Fired Pizza. We have been eying this pizza place for the past month and finally decided it was time to take the plunge. I opened the door and wasn’t sure if I was in the right place. When you walk in there is a full bar and lounge, gorgeous industrial ceilings, and hip modern décor. This was definitely a unique pizza place, never have I been to one quite like it. The menu had good selection of pies to choose from such as their Healthy Flatbread Pizza or Whole Wheat Pizza. But I wanted to know what this place was made of. Traditional Cheese for me Please.

Nick’s APizza Boca Raton – New Haven Style Pizza
Just got word that Nick’s APizza (pronounced abeets)is going to open up in Boca Raton near the Five Guys and Hooters. Not sure of the actual date yet since I am unable to contact anyone so far.
For those of you who don’t know pizza, Nick’s makes its pizza in a style called “New Haven”. Some of the best pizza joints in the country are located in New Haven, near Yale University, so it seems like it is the latest phrase to try to make your pizzeria stand out from the rest. Sally’s Modern and Pepe’s are just to name that reside in New Haven.
You see New Haven style differs from New York Style and regular style since they use dough, sauce and cheese. I guess none of the rest of the pizza places around use these ingredients as the basis of their recipes to call themselves APizza.

Henry’s 12th Street Tavern Pizza Portland, OR

Mrs. BDB and I were out for a pub crawl last Friday nite, and began our journey at a bar in the NW. We thought we’d better eat first, and by chance wandered into Henry’s Tavern, at Burnside and 12th. Henry’s is part of RUI, the Seattle restaurant corporation, the same folks who brought you Kincaids, Palomino, Newport, Stanfords, etc., etc, ad nauseum. Cookie cutter casual dining for a cookie cutter society.

Pssghetti’s Pizza Clearwater, FL
The Clearwater area is a part of Florida that I visit often to see friends. I have probably been there 20+ times in the last three years. On my drive in, I noticed a new restaurant called Pssghetti’s off of Highway 19. I wanted to try it because I had yet to find even a decent slice of pizza in that area. Upon arriving at Pssghetti’s, I noticed at how nice this place was on the inside. They had a little area like an Italian deli and market where you can purchase cooked and uncooked items to take home. They even had pizza shaped restaurant buzzers.
The menu was full of different types of personal gourmet pizzas. Although all sounded interesting, I was a little disappointed. I am a huge fan of pizza and toppings but I’m not a fan of gourmet Italian food. We ordered two different types of pizza, one with sliced sausage, home made meatballs, caramelized onions and fresh mozzarella and one with garlic roasted chicken, crisp sliced rosemary potatoes and fontina cheese. Both pizzas sounded promising and we were eager to dive in.

Trader Joe’s Frozen Wild Mushroom & Truffle Flatbread Pizza
Ed note: Although I find it hard to give a frozen pie 7 out of 8 slices, @burgerdogboy seems to know what he is talking about normally!
The back of the box says “while similar to a simple pizza, this fabulous, fascinating flatbread defines a category of its very own.” Agreed.
While living in Europe, even the worst pizzeria often put out a product superior to a lot of US pizzas; on those nights when I didn’t feel like going on, European frozen pizzas, especially those from Italy and France, more than satisfied my peculiarly picky palate. I often thought, “why can’t we get frozen pizza like this at home?” Now we can. As I have previously reviewed two of Trader Joe’s frozen offerings, the mushroom ‘tarte’, and the Pizza Olympiad, when I saw this “Wild Mushroom and Black Truffle Flatbread” yesterday, I knew it was destined for my oven last night.
