Una Pizza Napoletana San Francisco – Best Neapolitan Pizza

Una Pizza Napoletna

In 2009, Anthony Mangieri, the great pizzaiolo and owner of Una Pizza Napoletana moved his own cheese to the city by the bay, San Francisco.

Once nestled in lower Manhattan at 349 East 12th Street, just down the block from Luzzo’s La Pizza Napoletana and surrounded by other odd eateries like Momofuku and Fuku (not pronounced F*ck-You, but Foo-Koo), Una Pizza Napoletana now serves the faithful upscale guttersnipe of San Francisco.

Una Pizza San Francisco

For many years I had hoped for the opportunity to eat a few pies at the NYC location and for some odd reason or another I would have, but for the so-called “Pizza Expert’s” desire to take me and Sam-I-Am (our other esteemed pizza colleague), to repetitive and nonsensical revisits to L&B Spumoni Gardens and other been-there, done-that tomfoolery. Nevertheless, I didn’t. Even an impromptu trip to San Francisco several years ago, caused the Mad Greek to come up with burnt crumbs as this fine eatery is closed Monday and Tuesday. So when yours truly had the chance this past week to finally take in the long awaited pleasure of Mangieri’s genius, I did so, twice on November 30th and December 1st.

Many may complain that Una Pizza Napoletana’s prices are steep, and to some who like to sit home and watch porn and use their web coupons to save $2 on a Domino’s pizza, yeah, at $25 a pie, its expensive. But where else are you going to find a traditional Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) that doesn’t need to belong to some hokey cock and bull organization like so many others put on their window.

I’ll get right to the point… Anthony Mangieri makes the best f*cking VPN style pizza in America and quite possibly, the world. You don’t believe me? No problem, your loss. I’ve been reviewing and home cooking pizza for a long time. There is no doubt in my mind that Una Pizza Napoletana is the best VPN pizza. Just like there is no doubt in my mind that Johnny’s Pizza in Mt. Vernon, NY is the best deck style – Baker’s oven pizza in the country.

I’ll save you all the “he gets the best ingredients” and “he makes his own dough” and the platitudes of “the San Marzano tomatoes this” and “the Caputo flour that”, and so on and so on and so on. The bottom line here is this… if you never get the opportunity to go to Una Pizza Napoletana, it’s a real shame and I wouldn’t fault you if you’ve never been to San Francisco, or don’t have it in your travel plans for the foreseeable future. But if you live in the State of California, a place well known to have some of the absolute WORST PIZZA in all of creation, then you don’t have any excuse not to go to Una Pizza Napoletana. If you don’t, then you’re just a loser like the rest of the pathetic folks that like to live their lives complaining about everything and not experiencing the best of things instead.

Campisi’s Pizza Dallas Love Field

Campisi's Pizza Dallas Love Field

Campisi’s Pizza has a spot at Dallas Love Field Airport. I made the mistake of ordering a pie since my flight was delayed. There are times I wish I could go back in time and hit myself in the head for ordering pizza from certain places. Usually I have tried not to write anything too nasty lately, so I will try to tone this down. Campisi’s should be ashamed of the pizza they serve to the unsuspecting customers at this location. I have had Campisi’s Pizza before in Dallas and although it wasn’t the greatest, it certainly was better than this Love Field location. The oven looked good, the pizza looked good, but the taste was not what I had hoped for.

Campisi's Pizza Dallas

For some reason, this airport kiosk that holds the Campisi’s Pizza name serves pizza with lunchroom cafeteria sauce full of peel and sour taste (in my opinion), and enough flour to make it snow in Dallas in the summer. I think I will stop here and not get too nasty. Safe to say I do not intend on personally eating this pizza again. It has been my goal not to talk poorly about an establishment unless I felt it was really poor, this is one of those times I just felt like I should have gotten better pizza.

I know many of my readers will ask “what did you expect at an airport”. To this I would reply, DECENT PIZZA. The excuse that a place is in an airport and therefore should give subpar pizza to customers is a terrible way to justify not giving consumers the very best. It isn’t hard to use quality sauce and cheese, and decent ingredients in your crust. If you are going to give just average pizza at best, it should come with an average at best price.

Since there are other Campisi’s locations throughout Dallas that I have enjoyed on other occasions, I am sure I will be eating pizza from Campisi’s again in the future. I just will avoid this airport location.

Ciao Cucina & Bar Pizza Coconut Creek

Ciao Cucina & Bar Coconut Creek

Ciao Cucina just opened up in The Promenade at Coconut Creek towards the western end of the plaza. I stopped trying the new restaurants that opened in this location since it seemed like every time I went toThe Promenade at Coconut Creek there was a new restaurant there. This seems like the doomed spot to lease. Our friends from Tamarac asked to meet us somewhere half way so The Promenade seemed like the perfect location.

Once we arrived in the plaza we wandered around for a little bit, checking out what cuisines we had to choose from. We considered Bar Louie but then walked past Ciao. Ciao was enormous inside and had a cool ambiance. When I glanced down at the menu, I realized they had pizza as a food choice. After seeing a pie go by me and placed down on an outdoor table by a server, I decided this would be the place we ate that evening, even though we would be one of the only ones dining here on this Sunday night.

Our waiter wasn’t too friendly, and oddly enough kind of just gave up on us and handed us off to another server. We were perplexed since we didn’t think we were rude to him, or even said more than a few words. This is a prime example of how your servers can ruin an otherwise great dining experience.

I ordered the $11 Margherita pizza, which is Neapolitan style and cooked in their oven at 600 degrees. Since the server kind of gave me bad vibes, I wasn’t really expecting this pizza to be any good, and before I could even taste it I was thinking how long they will remain open before meeting the fate of the other restaurants that gave it a shot in this space. Once again, all due to the server attitude.

When the pizza came out it made my mouth water. This pie looked delicious. The high quality extra virgin olive oil was easy to see over the Fior Di Latte cheese they use. Fior Di Latte is semi-soft, fresh cheese made in the style of Italian mozzarella. I instantly brought the first slice to my mouth and my nose smelled a fresh and delightful aroma. Upon taking my first bite, I knew this pie was a winner. The fruity olive oil sprinkled on top of a sweet tasting, smooth sauce made the pizza delightful. The tasty, airy crust, and cheese were without fault.

Ciao Cucina in Coconut Creek gets their pizza made right. Let’s hope they can survive in this location, otherwise I hope they remove a bunch of items off their menu, and move to a smaller locale where they will only focus on their pizza. If you enjoy a good pie, you should go out of your way to eat here.

Isola Pizza San Diego

isola_pizza_san_diego.jpg

Isola Pizza San Diego, nestled into the comfy corridor of Little Italy in… you guessed it, San Diego… WHAT? Did you think I was going to say… New York? There’s no such thing as Little Italy in NY anymore and on that note, New Yorkers should be ashamed of themselves to trade thin crust pizza for fried wontons and pork lo mein. But enough of my rant, let’s get to the reasons why Isola Pizza is the Best Pizza in San Diego, CA.

Pizza Rock Las Vegas

Pizza Rock Las Vegas had its turn to be reviewed. While in Las Vegas the other day we went to many of our local favorites. We went to Secret Pizza at The Cosmopolitan to begin the trip and slowly worked our way through several others. One of the pizza places downtown that I have heard of for having the best pizza in las vegas was this newer place called Pizza Rock.

Pizza Rock is located a block off of the Freemont Street Experience. We actually stumbled upon the place by accident, before we even started looking for it. From the outside, it didn’t look like much, but once we entered we were surprised with how big the place was. Pizza Rock has an 11-time World Pizza Champion as a partner, so I was expecting a good pizza here.

D’Amore’s Pizza Malibu, California

When people think of Malibu, CA it is doubtful they think of pizza. Never have I heard someone say “hey, let’s go to Malibu and check out some pizza places.” Usually it is to go for rehab, Pepperdine, or to their wealthy beach house. Well I am one of those rare travelers who decides to embark on a journey to find good pizza. On this day I ended up in Malibu and pulled into D’Amore’s Famous Pizza.

Many people find Friday to be the best day of the week around the country, even in Boca Raton. I have nothing against Friday’s personally, and actually enjoy them as much as the next guy. Thursday is my new favorite day around Boca Raton for pizza though. Why you might ask? Well the answer is simple, it is the day that Manhattan Joe’s Pizza makes their Long Island Sicilian pie!

Pizza Lovers in South Florida Got “Jerk”ed Off

pizzeria_oceano.jpg

What would you think if the number 1 pizza place in Florida decided to stop serving pizza! Would you believe it?

One of the darling pizza joints of the region recently posted on their Facebook page that they will no longer be serving pizza. Yes, you heard us right. An extremely profitable and popular pizzeria has decided after six years to just change the menu and no longer serve pizza. The place as you might have guessed is Pizzeria Oceano in Lantana. Many pizza owners would give away an arm to have the successful business that Dak (the owner) built there, and yet overnight….POOF. He decides to change the menu.

Bambini’s Pizza Delray Beach

Bambinis_pizza.jpg

In Delray Beach there is a market simply called “The Boys”. If you could put up with shopping carts being pushed into your car, and people randomly backing out of their spots without looking, this is a great spot for you. The food is fairly priced and usually fresh. On many occasions I looked to the South of The Boys and realized there is also a place called “The Girls” and “Grammas Bakery”. I wanted to try them both but when I pulled into the shopping center, I also realized there is a place called Bambini’s Garden Pizzeria.

Obviously I didn’t make it into the other places and instead decided to try the pizza out here. We walked in and I ordered one regular and one Sicilian. After paying we went to find seats, only to realize that Bambini’s Pizzeria is connect to The Girls.
