#PizzaTweetup at Pizza D’Angelo Fort Lauderdale

Thanks to everyone for another successful and fun #pizzatweetup. Although it was quite hot in the place due to so many pizza lovers, the owner and staff of Pizza D’Angelo in Fort Lauderdale served up enough pizza to fill the bellies of over 65 attendees, and needless to say the pizza was great! It was awesome to see so many new faces in attendance as well as old friends. This is what Tweetups are for, not to try to rip off those in attendance, but rather to provide them with a reason to gather, and have an overall good time. I know I for one, had a blast. If you have any photos you would like for me to share on this post, please go ahead and send them in and I will be happy to display them and give you the proper credit.

Siclian Slice Gino’s Pizza Holbrook

We already reviewed the regular slice at Gino’s Pizza in Holbrook the other day, and now it is time to focus on the Sicilian Style slice I ordered that night as well. This Sicilian Slice came out of the oven and looked delicious. The cheese was melting over the edges like a mozzarella water fall, and it was easy to notice how crisp the slice was by holding the plate and feeling underneath.

After being only slightly impressed with the regular slice at Gino’s Pizza in Holbrook, I was hoping that this Sicilian Slice was better, I mean after all, many locals consider this to be “the best” pizza in the area. This slice had many things going for it, and against it, let’s start with the things the slice of pizza had going for it:

Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas

Ever since Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza opened up in Fort Lauderdale, and grew, it seems like everyone thinks they can hop on the bandwagon. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza on Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale is the latest of places to open in hopes of cashing in on the coal craze. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza I believe is owned by the same guys who serve some pretty great food at Tuscan Grill a little further west. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza is a cute place tucked away in the back of a parking lot next to Rocco’s Tacos. It was a quaint place, housing only 8 tables. I had tremendous hopes for this new place since the pizza at Tuscan Grill is pretty darn good with a wood oven.

Lets first look at why they might have chosen a coal oven to begin with.  Unlike a wood oven, cooking pizza with coal oven should come with a tremendous investment in first understanding the proper operation of the oven.  A coal fire is much harder to start (get hot) and is more difficult to manage than a wood fire or gas burner. Even the simple aspect of getting anthracite coal to burn right requires an ignition source in excess of 900 degrees (F) that is usually provided by a bed for burning charcoal or wood. Dry wood by comparison, burns more quickly and starts burning at around 450 F. Coal has roughly twice the heat/energy potential of wood (13,000 BTUs per pound for coal versus roughly 6,500 BTUs per pound for wood) so accessing and managing its potential energy when and where you need it can be challenging. (courtesy of woodstone-corp). So just hiring some regular pizza guy to run this oven is not enough to produce quality pizza. Just because you can cook with wood, does not mean you can cook with coal.

Gino’s Pizza Holbrook, Long Island

During my previous trip to Long Island, I got off the plane and asked my sister to take me to Albert’s in Ronkonkoma for some Upside Down Sicilian that they are quite famous for. While there I spoke to the guy at the next table who assured me that if I liked Albert’s Pizza, I would love Gino’s Pizza up the block in Holbrook, that it was the best pizza around. I didn’t think too much of this and just continued to eat, since if it was the best, why was he eating at another pizza place.  Later that day I was at a Soccer Tournament in Bethpage State Park and got into a conversation with the guy sitting next to me about pizza, and he said out of nowhere, that if I am ever in Holbrook, I should try Gino’s Pizza that he knew pizza and it could very well be one of the best slices on the Island. Well that was too much of a coincidence for me, so when it came lunch time the next day, I couldn’t wait to get to Holbrook (wherever that was) and try some of this delicious pizza at Gino’s Pizza.

Campania Pizza Southlake City Center Dallas

Back in September of 2009 I reviewed Campania Pizza in Southlake, Tx, about thirty minutes outside of downtown Dallas. During that visit I made some suggestions to the restaurant and pointed out ways to better their pie, such as using less flour. I was curious to see if they had listened, so while back in town visiting a close friend, I took a visit back there to see if they improved at all.

Campania Pizza has a nice decor, and I once again want to point out how comfortable this pizza place is. Campania is also located in the City Center in Southlake which is extremely nice and a great way to spend a day shopping.

Rack’s Downtown Eatery Pizza Mizner Park Boca Raton

Decided to give Rack’s Downtown Eatery in Boca Raton, Mizner Park to be specific, another try.  The first time I had Rack’s pizza it wasn’t awful, but when something is usually not awful, it means it eventually will become awful. When Matt suggested we try it again, I figured it had been long enough in between visits to see if anything had changed for the better or for the worst

One thing at Rack’s in Mizner Park that hasn’t changed is the gorgeous decor. Another thing that hasn’t changed is the excess of 65 year old women who keep the plastic surgeons in this town wealthy. This could be a fun place to people watch. Gary Rack spared no expense when remodeling this place, and Rack’s Downtown Eatery has managed to stay immaculately clean, and welcoming. The staff was friendly, and extremely attentive towards us, upon taking our seats. I think that Gary Rack and another local restauranteur David Manero open up some of the most spectacularly decorated eateries in the South Florida area, just thought I would pay them some compliments.

Luigi’s Pizza West Palm Beach, FL

It seems kind of odd that two pizzeria’s would be located next to each other in Downtown West Palm Beach, but low and behold, if you go to Pizza Girls, you might notice that there is a new Italian Restaurant next door selling Pizza as well. The new establishment is called Luigi’s and it is located right on Clematis Street, I decided to go and try it out the other night with Herb and Jeremy.

While enjoying some drunk girl trying to give a pole dance on a light post outside (which usually makes a dining experience much nicer) we waited a bit for our server to arrive. When our server eventually came he was extremely nice, knowledgeable and pleasant. He took our drink orders and we began watching the show again. Times like this I wish I had some singles.

Luigi’s by the way, contact me to get a new website, what you have is not gonna cut it.

Ovenella Pizza Boca Raton

Another pizza place decided to open up on the Federal Highway corridor of downtown Boca Raton where Saba was, Cavallino was, and what seems like several others. After many failed attempts for restaurants to make it in this location, a new place decided to redo the restaurant yet again, and make a go at it. The latest place is called Ovenella. Originally, Ovenella in Boca Raton was supposed to just be a new “artisan” pizza place. I guess using the word artisan would make them feel fancy and try to separate them from the other pizza places located in the immediate vicinity such as Tucci’s Pizza, Table 42, Speranza and the like. Somehow they decided to not only focus on pizza and instead offer a full menu and bar. Personally I like this idea since the competition of having some great pizza places around you might be too immense to survive.

Ovenella was beautiful inside. It appears no expense was spared during the redesign. The bar was fully stocked, and looked sleek, the restaurant was airy, open, and spotless, and you just couldn’t help but feel comfortable inside. Although Andy (who I ate with) begged to differ, I thought the hostess was extremely nice and attentive. Not only did she seat us, but she took it upon herself to help out the waiter and bring us our water.

Luna Pizza Stuart, Fl Best Garlic Knots

Luna Pizza in Stuart Florida is known for having some of the best Garlic Knots in the country. They are deliciously oily, cheesy, garlicky and bite size. We sometimes drive all the way out of our way just to go up there and grab a few dozen. Since I normally fill up on Garlic Knots, I tend to skip the pizza, so when we were headed back from Orlando, I decided to take the family to Luna Pizza and actually try some pizza this time (and garlic knots of course).

As I might have previously mentioned before, Luna is one of the few places around all of Martin County, FL, and probably for most of Palm Beach County too, where you can walk up to a pizza window outside and grab what you want. It is like an old Brooklyn or NYC joint that my Grandfather used to take me to in Upper Manhattan before heading on the subway. This time around though, I did not get the pizza at the window and instead opted for a dozen garlic knots (they really are the best garlic knots in Florida as of now) to eat outside while waiting for the dining room to open, so my family and I could order a pie and sit down.
