Best Coal Oven Pizza Boca Raton = Tucci’s

tuccisoven.jpgtucci.jpgI have gone time and time again to Tucci’s just to try to find a fault, and I just cannot.  Maybe the green shirt the owner wears could be nicer, but outside of that, the pizza has consistently managed to impress me.  Therefore I am making the statement that Tucci’s Pizza in Boca Raton, has the best coal oven pizza I have had in this city.

Best Pizza Slice in Downtown Orlando Gino’s Pizza

ginos_pizza.jpgGinospizza.jgpginospizza.jpgSince I was in Downtown Orlando again and remembered my previous experience at Gino’s Pizza, I couldn’t wait to try it again.  Take note Big Jim when I say, that this pizza is superb, and if you ever choose to go to Dan’s Midnight Pizza, no matter how drunk you are over this place, you are nuts.  Gino’s Pizza is located on 120 S. Orange Ave, 888.892.3666.

The Best Pizza in America According To GQ’s Alan Richman.. Like He Knows

best_american_pizzaSomehow, Alan Richman is supposed to be an expert on pizza. Seemingly out of nowhere, this GQ writer is somehow a pizza expert that knows the pie so well, he can name the best ones in the country and where they’re made.

He makes two mistakes: 1) He attempts to lay claim to the title of Pizza Expert and King of Pizza when we all know full well who really holds that title. 2) He names pizzas and pizza joints around the country, but fails to include any Florida pizzas on his list.

Both fatal mistakes, as we shall see.

As the real pizza expert who’s spent decades honing my craft as a connoisseur of all things pizza pie, I can tell you that Richman knows zilch. Nadda. Zip. Ze nothing.

What he does know how to do is write an extremely verbose commentary on pizza. I’ll admit that, compared to myself, his writing skills are superb and he definitely knows how to paint a picture of beautiful pizzas and sparkling taste buds. Sadly, while he’s a great painter of words, he’s picking the wrong subjects for his canvas.

Everyone knows that inventing things does not imply being the best at it or perfecting it. Richman was right with his assessment that while the Greeks and/or Italians invented the pizza, it took Americans to make it superb. Face it, in a world dominated by French and Asian cuisine, the pizza is one of the few things Americans can compete with with culinary prowess.

Note that DiGiorno is missing from Richman’s list. Good work on that too, I say that, since they have chosen to not include us as a free pizzatweetup recipient. Too bad he missed so many others that should have been on the list, though.

OK, Mr. Richman, it’s time to go to school. Some of your picks were pretty good and I give you props for boosting some lesser-known joints whose pizza is definitely worth traveling for. All that said, though, class is now in session and the Pizza Expert is going to show you what real pizza is all about.

Here’s Alan’s list of Top 25, for reference. I’ll go into what’s missing and wrong here afterwards:

1. Great Lake (Chicago)
2. Lucali (Brooklyn)
3. Pizzeria Delfina (San Francisco)
4. Pizzeria Bianco (Phoenix)
5. Bob & Timmy’s (Providence, RI)
6. Sally’s Apizza (New Haven, CN)
7. Tomato Pie (Los Angeles)
8. Co. Company (Manhattan)
9. Tocconelli’s (Philadelphia)
10. Totonno’s (Brooklyn)
11. Tarry Lodge (Port Chester, NY)
12. Frank Pepe (New Haven, CT)
13. Luigi’s “the Original” (Harrison Township, MI)
14. Gialina (San Francisco)
15. Buddy’s (Detroit)
16. Antica Pizzeria (Marina Del Ray, CA)
17. A16 (San Francisco)
18. Al Forno (Providence, RI)
19. Galleria Umberto (Boston)
20. Famous Joe’s (Manhattan)
21. Tomatoes Apizza (Farmington Hills, MI)
22. Osteria (Philadelphia)
23. Santarpio’s (Boston)
24. Niki’s (Detroit)
25. Una Pizza Napoletana (Manhattan)

There’s the boy’s list. Now for the one you should be reading if you’re looking for the nation’s top pie tossers and pizza makers. These are ones he missed.

L&B Spumoni Gardens (Brooklyn, NY)
Di Fara’s (Brooklyn, NY)
Rosa’s Pizza (Queens, NY)
Tucci’s PIzza (Boca Raton, FL)
Kitchenetta (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
Spacca Napoli (Chicago)
Ninos’s of Boca (Boca Raton, special pie they make for me)

The Pizza Expert has spoken. Sorry, Richman, real pizza ain’t for kids. Class dismissed. And for the record Sally’s is not better then Frank Pepe’s!

Best Pizza Lighthouse Point Sicilian Oven

img_0981sicilianoven.jpgGot a tip from someone the other day, that someone who used to work at Anthony’s had opened his own place up in Lighthouse Point, named Sicilian Oven.  So naturally Mikey and I, made the journey to go and try it.  The Sicilian Oven is located on 2486 N Federal Hwy 954.785.4155.  When we located the place, I remember it being a DiSalvos or something like that.  It was a place we tried many many years ago and didn’t really care for, so when we saw it no longer in business it came as no surprise.

The Sicilian Oven smelled great when we walked in, and we were seated within a view of the ovens that they use.  Watching a fully flamed oven is kind of beautiful, especially when they throw some oil in there to heat it up!  We ordered a small regular pie to split, and anxiously awaited for the first bite.

When the pizza arrived, it looked fantastic.  We both took and slice, and upon biting in, we both looked at each other and gave the eyes of bliss to one another.  This pizza was great.  The crust was tasty and crisp, the cheese tasted awesome, and the olive oil they used on top of the pie after removing it from the oven, gave this slice such a rich taste.  Ideally, I would take some of the chunks out of the sauce guys.  The sauce was a little too heavy for my liking, but tasted decent.  So it wasn’t nearly enough of a negative to take any points away from the overall experience.  This is a place we will definitely try again if we are in the area, and we recommend to anyone who thinks Anthony’s Coal Pizza is good, to try this place before making that statement.  The Sicilian Oven is far better then Anthony’s.

The Sicilian Oven gets 7 out of 8 slices.

Best Pizza: Rosa’s Pizza Middle Village Queens

img_0651img_06521img_06531As if the first Rosa’s pizza wasn’t awesome enough, they have a second one not too far away.  The Rosa’s Pizza located in Midldle Village, Queens, is located on only like 10 minutes from the other one in Maspeth, Queens.

Although this Rosa’s was seemingly delicious, it wasn’t as good as the previous slices we had at the one in Maspeth.  Maybe it was due to the fact that the Maspeth location was busier and had fresh pies coming out all day, and that the Middle Village one had to reheat theirs, but if I had to pick one or the other I would pick Maspeth.

Rosa’s Pizza in Middle Village might have been one of the best slices I had that day, had I not gone to the other Rosa’s before hand.  It is important to note, that this pizza was still exceptional, and well worth going to.  If you haven’t eaten at Spumoni Gardens or the other Rosa’s Pizza, you might think you have found the perfect slice actually.  Rosa’s does server regular slices, but they are known for their Upside Down Sicilian, which they call Red.

The fresh Mozzarella cheese is baked into the dough and the sauce is added on top, with some parm cheese.  The sauce is amazingly sweet and tasty, and all-in-all everything about this pizza says quality.

Rosa’s Pizza in Middle Village gets 7 out of 8 slices.

Tucci’s Pizza Boca Raton

tucci's pizza.jpgFor all those who haven’t ventured out lately in the Boca Raton area, or haven’t read my previous posts, Red Rock Pizza has closed down recently.  Although we all loved the taste and quality that came along with Red Rock, you will be happy to know that Tucci‘s picks up where they left off.

When I first entered the new Tucci’s Pizza place on 50 NE 1st avenue in Boca Raton, near Mizner (561) 620-2930, I immediately noticed how cleaned up the placed look.

Kitchenetta Best Pizza Florida

Kitchenetta Pizza

If you haven’t been to Kitchenetta in Fort Lauderdale, you are missing the best pizza I might have ever had in South Florida. Kitchenetta is located on 2850 N. Federal Hwy in Fort Lauderdale. Years ago, my wife and I were driving through Fort Lauderdale, and we noticed this place on the east side of Federal Highway that looked kind of cute. Each time we passed it, we said ‘oh, we should try that one day”. That expression must have been used about 6-7 times before we stopped in one day to actually try it.

Once we finally did stop in to try it, I couldn’t believe how I ever did without it. The pizza was nothing less than incredible. That is right…the expert who looks for flaws thought this Italian Restaurant in Florida made some of the best pizza he has ever had. Even though kitchenetta, was extremely overpriced for many other things, including $3.00 for a can of soda. That is right, you heard me, they actually have the audacity to charge $3.00 for a can. A can that probably costs $0.25. Management should really do something about this!

Anyways, until I create worstpricesforsoda.com, we will just focus on the pizza. And what a great topic to focus on here. Let’s start with the oven. Look at this beauty of an oven Kitchenetta has installed. It is a Brick oven that burns White Oak. This is almost identical to the ones you would find in Naples, Italy. No gases used.

The owner of the place explained to me that they only use Caputo Flour 00 for the dough, which adds to its amazing taste. You cannot help but bite into this dough and taste the quality. The Whole Milk Mozzarella cheese is home made daily which adds to the fresh taste. For their sauce they only use San Marzano tomatoes. Without even having the conversation with the owner, I could have basically guessed that they were using such fine, expensive ingredients in their pizza.

Before you are served the pizza, they give you this delightful pizza bread to snack on. Make sure you try this when you are there. Do not pass it up.

img_0869img_0870

The pizza to the right is their Lobster pizza, which Greg had, and didn’t really care for. He thought it was way too salty and that the lobster was tiny for the $18.00 price he was charged. But since I didn’t try it, nor would I ever try pizza with lobster, I cannot really say if he is right or wrong. He did however, agree on the regular pie I had, so maybe his tastebuds were accurate about his pizza too. I cannot say I was pleased with parts of the crust being overally charred, but it didn’t make a difference to the taste.

It has been without fail, that the dozens of friends I have recommended to this place, have quickly decided that it was their favorite. I won’t even get into how awesome their regular Italian Dishes are as well.

This could be the first perfect slice rating I have given to any place so far in South Florida. Kitchenetta gets 8 out of 8 slices, which equals perfection. Just remember, when it comes to their beverage pricing, this place is far from perfection. If the pizza wasn’t so amazing, I could never justify going back.

And guys……what the heck is up with your website! You need to have me redesign it!!

Rosa’s Pizza Maspeth Queens Best Pizza

img_0648img_0649..Let’s just start off this review by saying Phenomenal!  I have always wanted to try the original Rosa’s Pizza in Maspeth Queens, since I really enjoyed their pizza in Penn Station after a hard day of work.  So when I arrived in New York this time and Sam asked where I wanted to go, I instantly demanded that we try out the original Rosa’s in Queens, unaware if the Maspeth or Middle Village location was the original.

Rosa’s Pizza has locations popping up all over the city and Long Island now, and I can understand why.  They serve this delicious (my mouth is watering as I type) upside down Sicilian, which you might also know is my favorite pizza by now.

When we pulled up to Rosa’s, it was nothing I thought it would be.  I pictured it to look more like a restaurant, but it was instead just an average building, with a pizza parlor there.  I walked up to the counter and immediately made eye contact with the Upside Down (or red Sicilian, as they like to call it).  I ordered up a slice and tried to start a conversation with the “too cool to talk to you guy” behind the counter.  This guy had no idea about anything relating to Rosa’s Pizza.  A simple question if this was the original was even too hard for this pizza thug to comprehend.  But all this didn’t matter, cause once that slice came out, and I bit into it, and the crust and cheese melted in my mouth, I was in heaimg_0650ven.

I actually even closed my eyes as I chewed on what was left after the melt, picturing myself eating dozens of these slices everyday (for free).  To anyone who is looking for a good upside down Sicilian slice, Rosa’s gets how to make it, at this location.  The sauce is so nice and sweet, and thin, and the cheese is freshly baked into the dough, which is let to rise in my opinion about 2-3 times.  This is a must try, and worth going out of your way to check out.

Rosa’s Gets what very few other pizza places have gotten previously….a PERFECT SCORE 8 out of 8 slices!

Albert’s Pizza Ronkonkoma Best Pizza Long Island

img_0641img_0642For my nephews birthday party, my sister special ordered from Albert’s in Ronkonkoma.  Albert’s Pizza is probably one of the Best Pizza Places in Long Island.  Located on 601-9 Portion Road in Ronkonkoma, NY 631.487.4674.  Many of you may know, that Albert’s received the first perfect 8 out of 8 slices from us here at worstpizza.com.  At the time we ate in, this time they delivered from pretty far away to my sisters house.  By the time the pizza got there it was pretty soggy and a bit cold.  So in all fairness this pizza should have never traveled this far.  Just wanted to state that prior to the review.

My first slice came from the regular pie, which had a nice taste to it, but was a bit too soggy to fully enjoy.  However the cheese and crust tasted pretty good, and the sauce was a perfect blend.  The second slice I had was from their award winning upside down Sicilian slice.  This too was a bit cold and soggy, and I was too hungry to reheat this in the oven.  Even for cold and soggy Albert’s still produces an amazing slice.

I will give Albert’s 7 out of 8 slices, for this time.  Which is pretty incredible considering the distance it traveled to get there.  Thank you for delivering it so far for us!!
