CPK – California Pizza Kitchen in Boca Raton

I don’t really like the whole concept of chain restaurants, but they are growing on me.  And I never understood California Pizza Kitchen.  But I now realize outside of New York there just aren’t decent options.  So I am enjoying the new California Pizza Kitchen in the Boca Raton Town Center Mall.  The key is to not get the traditional margherita or pepperoni pizza that you would get in your local pizzeria.  That’s not what CPK is about.  Its about reinventing pizza.  I had a pizza that was half buffalo wing and half Mexican (carne Asada).  They were both delicious.  The crust was a better base than any sandwich could be.  The toppings were fresh, bursting with flavor, and I couldn’t get enough.  I went back a few days later and got the same pie again.  I don’t think of it as pizza; I consider it another food item altogether.  If I am not comparing it to New York pizza, it gets 5 out of 8 slices.

Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza Boca Raton

One of the perks about writing for worstpizza is talking about pizza with the rest of the staff.  That’s how I came to know about Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza.  And so far, I like it.  The pizza is about as authentic as New York pizza gets down here.  The right amount of sauce, cheese and crust.  It’s not heavy or leaden like some other place that ‘claim” to be of New York descent.  And it is a casual place to stop by for a slice if your in the area.

Remembering this extremely long name is another story, good thing I am only focusing on the pizza. The pizza is as good as Nino’s so its really a matter of location when trying to decide between the two.  I give it 6 of 8 slices.  Hear that Nino’s, add counter service and you get 6 of 8 from me!!!  You increase a full point!

Casa L’italien My Personal Boca Raton Favorite

What can I say… Casa L’Italien is my favorite pizza in Boca Raton Florida. If you like ultra thin New York City style pizza this is the place. It’s often my default pizza to get for pick up when I have that craving. The slices are thin, like I said, and there’s always service with a smile. The slices are so thin you wont feel guilty eating 4 slices, yes 4 slices. I just took 10 kids and 3 adults there the other day as part of my sons 12 year old birthday. The management was great. The kids went wild and everyone just loved it. Not only is the pizza aces for Florida, the onion rings, mozzorella sticks, and french fries are awesome. All the kids said I didn’t even know about this place before I took them. Thats easy to understand, being Casa L’Italien is tucked away in a sleepy shopping center off of western Yamato Road. Casa L’Italien guys if you are listeneing, a little advertising would be a great idea!!!

Renzo’s Cafe & Pizzeria Boca Raton

I like Renzo’s Pizza. It is pretty close to a New York style corner pizza place. It’s nothing special, but the pizza is good. Especially hot out of the oven.

Renzo’s in Boca Raton has a few tables, but its not a real “dining” experience. A major plus is they serve slices during the day, without having to have someone serve them to me. Renzo’s of Boca also delivers throughout the day and night. There are certainly a bunch of worse Pizza joints in Boca Raton.

On a scale of 1 to 8 slices, where 5 is Good and 6 is Really Good, I give Renzo’s a 5.

Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza Boca Raton

Living in Central Boca Raton I was very excited that Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza opened. I went there a lot the first week it opened, not as much the 2nd week, once the 3rd week and then totally forgot about it. I was heading to one of the coal fired places on the eastern side of town, but ran out of time and gave Anthony’s another try. It just wasn’t good. They say the pizza is “well done” but its not. The crust is floppy, the pie does not hold together well, and it is not enjoyable. It is more mushy than chewy. I don’t like the tiny little meatballs they serve, so I ordered pepperoni. There was a very nice amount of it, but it left the pizza too greasy. The best I can say about it was that cold out of the fridge as a leftover it had tasted decent. Maybe because it was firm, not floppy. The best thing about the place is it is nicely decorated and the service is good. It gets 2 of 8 slices which on my scale means I Wouldn’t go back.

Nino’s Pizza Boca Raton – A Second Opinion

I have been a fan of worstpizza for a long time and was honored when I became a reviewer.  Today marks another milestone.  I had lunch with the founder, Pizza Expert.  We went for, you guessed it, pizza.  Deciding where to go was a big question.  We decided on Nino’s Italian Restaurant in Boca Raton (7120 Beracasa Way N.W. Corner of Powerline and Palmetto Park Road, Del Mar Shopping Village (561) 392-9075.

Nino’s Ownership Change Doesn’t Affect Pizza

Matt, Big G, Keith & Myself, went to try the pizza at Nino’s Italian Restaurant in Boca Raton today. After hearing bad things about the pizza since the change of ownership, we decided it was best left into the hands of experts to decide whether or not things have changed.

We ordered 1 regular pie, and one Sicilian pie. Both came out hot and tasty, and I didn’t notice anything different about the pizza, except the positive differentiator of having more cheese on the Sicilian then they used to put. Anyone who claims Nino’s Pizza tastes differently, is obviously someone from the original crew who split up and are trying to bad mouth the establishment. Just because Nino’s Pizzaria’s website totally sucks, does not mean the pizza sucks. If I were Nino’s, I would use a photo of my actual pizza instead of some generic istock photo that they have on the front page of their website. It is very unappetizing, and your regular pizza looks light years better.

The verdict is still out on whether or not the original crew and current owners of the Boca Raton location are remaining friendly, but their website still shows the Delray Beach location where the original crew went, so perhaps it was more amicable then early reports said. I will give Nino’s in Boca Raton 6 out of 8 slices. Should probably be a 5 but I haven’t had anything good to compare it to recently.

Backyard Pizza Oven – This Is The Coolest Guy

Today was one of the best Sunday’s a Pizza Expert could ask for!  Billy invited me to his friends house out in Western Boca Raton.  Since I usually play poker with the guy who invited him, I decided to tag along.  The purpose of the gathering was to watch the Dolphin Vs. Jets game.  Although I am a football fan, my reason for going had nothing to do with football.  The real reason I insisted on tagging along had everything to do with the Pizza Oven this family has in their backyard.

This is a pure pizza oven made by Marshal, faced with red bricks.  The stone in the oven was spotless, and they have a full prep table under the counter, filled with toppings, and a refridgerator for the fresh ingredients.  Needless to say, visiting this house, is like going to heaven for me.  There are few places I could think of that I would rather be on Sunday’s from now on in.  The first pie he took out of the oven was spectacular.  Too bad I ate like all 8 slices, cause I didn’t have much room to try the other specialty pies he was making.

The homemade sauce he made was a bit spicy, but never the less, was amazing.  As he kneading the dough, he added some parmesean cheese, some fresh garlic, and then the sauce.  A nice even amount of sauce, spread out clockwise from the center to the edges.  Then came the fresh shredded mozz. cheese, and then some fresh oregano.  Watching this pizza cook in the oven had my mouth watering. One thing I learned today from him….You should always place the hot pizza on wood before putting it on the serving dish.  I will give his Back Yard Pizza 7 out of 8 slices.  And I thank him and his wonderful family for being such a hospitable host to me and my son today!

If you have a pizza oven in your backyard, I would love to see pictures and post them on the site.  Tell us about some of the stuff you use in your home pizza station, to make yours the best.

Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton Seems Spicier

Passed by Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton the other day, and stopped in with my son to have a pie.  As you might be aware from my previous post about Augy’s in Boca Raton, they are known for their thin Sicilian.

Augy’s recently went through a change of ownership, but I have heard rummblings that the old owner is still there making pizza.  Although the pie looks the same, there was something different about the sauce.  It was a bit spicier then usual.  Wonder if they changed the recipe recently.  If they did, they should not fix something that isn’t broken.  Maybe it was just a bad mix that day.

The crust was perfect, crispy and tasty, and the cheese tastes like some of the finest.  Guess I will have to go and do another spot check to see if the sauce actually changed, or if it was just an off day.

I will give Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton 5 out of 8 slices this visit.
