Lazzaras Pizza Thin Crust In New York City

Lazzaras Pizza on 221 West 38th Street, NYC (212) 944-7792 is located on the 2nd floor of a building. A building with a very dangerous entrance Thankfully I didn’t go when there was ice, but I am pretty certain I could have eaten the street as well as the pizza if I took one misstep.

Lazzaras Pizza is known for their thin crust pizza. As we were walking throughout the city Big G mentioned that he once knew a place around the garment district that had some pretty good pies. Herb and I once again learned never to doubt Big G’s memory. He led us right to the doorstep of this place. We headed up to the second floor and sat down in this small, yet quaint restaurant. Seeing the pizza as we were seated, made me start to crave it. The pizza reminded me of Pizza Supreme, which I really enjoy, so I was anxious to get a pie in the oven.

We ordered 2 pies, one with meatball and one plain. They didn’t take too long to cook and when they came out, I couldn’t thank Big G enough. These pizzas were delicious. The cheese was ultra fresh, and the sauce had a nice sweet taste. It was the crust that stood out most. The crust was perfectly crisp and tasted pretty damn good. Should I be around this area again, I will be sure to go and try the pizza again. Just be warned about the steps…they are quite steep and not properly spaced.

I will give Lazzaras Pizza in New York City 7 out of 8 slices.

Miami Dolphins Stadium Pizza – Papa Johns

Since I reviewed the pizza at the Florida Panthers game the other day, I found it only suitable to finally publish this review I did on Papa Johns pizza at the Dolphin’s Game.  Some might know the arena that the Dolphin’s play in to be Pro Player Stadium, so when I refer to Dolphin’s Stadium that is what I mean.

We went to go watch the Dolphin’s play the Seahawks a few weeks ago courtesy of Eric.  Like usual my son started to complain he was thirsty and hungry when we go there so we naturally went to the concession stand.  There is nothing I like better then spending like $50.00 on a large soda.  When we got to the counter I noticed they had Papa Johns Pizza there.  I ordered a plain pie and prepared myself for the worst.

Those of you who read my reviews regularly know that in my opinion Papa Johns is better then Domino’s Pizza but still pretty horrendous.  So if you take bad quality and bad ingredients and add them into an arena setting where they are sitting on a rack waiting for you, you can only imagine how wonderful it must taste.

Even though I was starving, this pizza was barely edible.  It was cold, it was rubbery, and the box was too big when I was done to place it comfortably anywhere.  Usually when a company claims they use better ingredients, the cheese doesn’t end up hard and rubber like, and make it almost snap back onto the pizza as you are pulling a slice apart.  The pizza at the Panther’s game was definitely better then this, in my opinion.

I will give the Papa Johns Pizza at Dolphin’s Stadium 1 out of 8 slices.

Patxi’s Chicago Pizza Restaurant in Palo Alto California

Food Nut brings us his review of Patxi’s Chicago Pizza.  The Classic Chicago-style deep dish pizza is the reason to visit.  Pronounced “paw-CHEESE”, Patxi’s pizza located on 441 Emerson Street in Palo Alto, (650) 473-9999, is run by a former cook and manager of Zachary’s Pizza in Oakland.  With that heritage, it was time to compare it again the reference.

Decor, Vibe – The Palo Alto location was clean with a new modern feel.  Lots of Stanford students were eating here. This place serves only pizza, salad, and drinks.

We tried the Caesar Salad ($5.25 or $9.50) and found it appealing but with lots of dressing.  Nice anchovies on top. Pretty big salad for $5.25.

The 10in Thin Crust ($14.10) took about 20 minutes.  We had half Spinach Pesto, half Hawaiian.
The Spinach Pesto side was the better of the two. Not overpowering in flavor, good crust, kinda soggy in middle. Not exactly healthy but perhaps a little less guilt.  If you like artisan pizza, head to Pizzaria Delfina.

The 10in Thick Crust ($18.35) took about 30 minutes.  We had the ‘Favorite’ with pepperoni, mushrooms and black olives. It was very heavy on the tomatoe quantity and flavor.  The pep could have been more plentiful as I didn’t really taste it.  The crust was fair, being only ok on the sides but not great on the bottom. Leftovers the next day still didn’t hit the spot.

Comparison to BJ’s Favorite deep dish pizza ($19.75 Medium) – BJ’s has a crispy bottom and side edge but softer dough and no cornmeal. They also have far far less real tomatoes. They take about 15 minutes to bake. The BJ’s pizza is good but has a lot less substance to the crust and toppings.

The thin Hawaiian had pineapple and meat that could have used more cooking.

The service was good, with our young server pretty attentive.  Several wine and beer options. If I was in need of a deep dish pizza fix and did not want to drive, this is the place to go.  Zachary’s and Little Star Pizza were better than this deep dish. You can also order pizza’s half-baked.  I will give Patxi’s Chicago Pizza 4 out of 8 slices.

Florida Panthers Pizza Bank Atlantic Center

Excuse my photos on this review please.  It was hard to take pictures with all the different color lights flashing overhead.

This year I decided to coach my sons Basketball team.  At the end of the season the team gave me club level seats to see the Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.  When we got up to the club level we were in awe with the food choices.  This isn’t your everyday sports venue eating establishment.  This is like a fancy restaurant with different food stations.  Shockingly, I chose the pizza.

The pizza was an individual one made from scratch in front of you.  Although they had about 4 different types, I chose the plain.  At a cost of $10.00 for this small pie, I was reluctant….but you know how it is.  You see pizza, you have to try it.  The pizza itself was very undercooked.  The crust was not crisp and almost tasted like white bread.  They put 3 cheeses on this pizza I found out after tasting.  It was Mozz, parm, and cheddar.  YES I SAID CHEDDAR (GROSS),  The sauce wasn’t terrible though, and considering how hungry I was I managed to finish it.  Well I finished everything but the crust, cause I figured I could always have some wonder white bread later that evening if I had the craving.

I will give the pizza place at the Bank Atlantic Center 3 out of 8 slices.  It was better then domino’s, but not as good as Subway Pizza.

Trattoria Pizzeria Cilea in Vomero Naples Italy

Most of the pizzerias I review on this blog are already fairly well-known, at least in Naples. It’s for that reason that I’m particularly pleased to review Trattoria Pizzeria Cilea, a small, 8-table pizzeria located  in Vomero. We happened upon Cilea the first day I went searching for my pizza school. It was late in the afternoon, the place was empty, and I had eaten only two hours before. But I decided to give it a shot. I knew after the first few bites of my margherita that I was eating something special. For the rest of the afternoon,  I couldn’t stop talking about how surprisingly distinct the tomato sauce was. Now I’ve been going there for over two months and I’m convinced that Cilea has the best red sauce in Naples.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with the dough. A few days ago, Margaret and I tried to compare the excellent dough at Cilea with the equally excellent dough at Pizzeria Sorbillo (a review is soon to follow). In my mind, these are two top notch pizzerias that occupy the opposite ends of the dough spectrum. Here is a list of adjectives we came up with to describe the two doughs:

Cilea: dense, moist, bold, chewy, airy, succinct, whimsical, doughy.
Sorbillo: crisp, resilient, pliable, resourceful, doughy.
(New York Times here I come!)

As for the cheese: The fior di latte was remarkably creamy without causing the same soupy effect that mozzarella di bufala causes (I’ve got to say “soupy” at least once in each review).
The sauce: What can I really say except that I’ll have another thing to weep over once I leave Italy. It was distinctly salty without going overboard. I’ve noticed, even in Naples, that tomato sauce is often used as a filler. But this stuff took command of the pizza and everything else was a delightful aftertaste.

At first, I was afraid the pizza bianca would pale in comparison to its red brethren. But I was quickly proven wrong. The arugula was fresh. The parmigiana was strong, and the red sauce was replaced with extra virgin olive oil and seasalt. If you want the best white pizza in the world,  go to Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, AZ. If Bianco’s is closed, hop on a plane towards Naples, go to Vomero, and try the pie at Cilea.

End Note: Cilea also takes the award for having the most bang for its euro. At 2.60 euros for a margherita to-go, you might as well order four.   I will give Trattoria Pizzeria Cilea 7 out of 8 slices.  Only thing keeping this from getting a perfect 8 slices, is the fact there are way too many pizza places I haven’t tried around this region.

Give The Gift Of Pizza On Christmas

A very special pizza shop owner in Gibsonville, North Carolina named April Murray is doing something very special for kids in her community, which in turn affects our society as a whole.  Gibsonville is located to the east of Greensboro, not too far from Elon College.

April, who owns Just Pizza on West Main Street in downtown Gibsonville is offering free pizza to help make Christmas special for kids in need.  All you need to do is stop by after 4:00pm and bring a gift.  If you cannot make it to the Just Pizza, you can also go to the fire house on Piedmont Avenue and they will give you a coupon for dropping off a present.  When April Murray heard there was only ONE toy in the donation box at the Gibsonville Fire Department, she decided to give her pizzas away to help.

So far April has given away more then 30 pizzas.  Let’s hope she gives away hundreds.  Some partrons have been kind enough to just stop by and drop off gifts, while refusing to even take the free pizza.  Just when you think all humanity is lost, the residents of Gibsonville prove that there are still some good hearted people out there.  THANK YOU APRIL!

Jon’s Place For Kosher Pizza In Boca Raton

We were driving around Boca Raton on Thanksgiving trying to find a place to eat lunch.  In actuality we were actually just getting out of the house so we wouldn’t be asked to contribute any assistance to the Thanksgiving meal.  But while we ducked out we kind of got hungry.  The four of us, father in law, brother in law, my son, and I decided we should find a pizza place that was open, even if we had to waste hours in doing so.  After driving around aimlessly it dawned on me…..The Kosher Pizza Place would probably be opened.

Jon’s Place is tucked away in Boca Raton near the Olive Garden and Kosher Marketplace.  It had been like 5 years since I last ate at this establishment.  I think the last time I went there was on Christmas, for the obvious reason of them being the only place open once again.  Jon’s serves to the Kosher community around it.  For thos of you who haven’t had Kosher Pizza before, it is a bit different.  You see… where regular pizza has dough, sauce and cheese, Kosher Pizza has dough, sauce, cheese and a rabbinical blessing.

I ordered a slice cause it occurred to me that I didn’t really like the taste last time.  When I bit into it, my previous occurrence was accurate.  The pizza really just didn’t do it for me.  If I was someone who led a Kosher life, and didn’t know other pizza, maybe this would be considered decent…I don’t know.  It was very bland and the sauce was kind of rough to swallow.  Everyone else in the place seemed to really enjoy it other then us, so it is hard to knock the place since I am not a member of the orthodox community.  Perhaps they are using what is considered the best ingredients that they have access to, which I doubt in my opinion.

In my opinion Jon’s Place gets 2 out of 8 slices.  I would love to have someone who only eats Kosher Pizza to message me info@worstpizza.com and compare this to other pizza slices they have had.

PS what a funny sign to have on their counter.

Pizza Supreme in Coral Springs Florida

On the way back to the office a couple of days ago, I found myself traveling through Coral Springs, or maybe it was Parkland?  It is hard to tell where the divide is.  Anyways, I haven’t been around this area too often since the loss of a grandmother many years ago.  As I was passing by, I remembered I used to really enjoy eating at this pizza joint nearby.

Pizza Supreme of Coral Springs (not to be confused with the Pizza Supreme in Long Island) on Wiles Road in Coral Springs / Parkland has been around since I used to come down to visit here, prior to moving.  So we must be talking about 17-20 years of being opened.  It is hard for a place that isn’t easily noticeable from the road to last as long as they have, without having a decent slice.  I was joyed to see that the lady Gail behind the counter recognized me after all these years.  My choice for today was 2 regular slices and some garlic knots.  They actually have knots here and not rolls, which shows their Queens roots.

The slices came out hot and crispy.  They tasted just as I remembered them from throughout all the years I ate at this place.  Do not expect to find fancy furnishings or paintings here.  You come to a place like Pizza Supreme to grab a slice and eat it.  No servers to carry your pizza to you 2 steps from the counter.  No busboy to take your paper plate to the trash bin.  Just good quality pizza made with care at this place.

Pizza Supreme is not a place that I will drive 30 minutes from my house to get to, but if I am ever in the area, or going to visit a friend across the street, I will always stop by to grab a slice or pie.  Try this place if you haven’t yet, and are looking for New York attitude, accents, and pizza.  Pizza Supreme gets 5 out of 8 slices.

Peanut Butter and Jelly PIZZA???

Another morning in Disney World brings me to my 2nd ever breakfast pizza.  After a positive experience at the Cape May Cafe, we are now at Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary Hotel.

I like this restaurant better, and the characters seem more fun and interactive.  And this Peanut Butter and Jelly pizza tastes quite good. Never thought I could find a place that would even serve a Peanut Butter and Jelly Pizza.  Guess magical things do happen at Disney. It’s  not addicitive, but it’s alot of fun to eat in a place where fun might mean more than taste. The kids seems to really get a kick out of having something so different.

Eating this pizza makes me wonder why it isn’t just peanut butter and jelly flatbread or something, but when you are Disney, you call anything you want whatever you want.  It gets 3 of 8 Slices.

Best Pizza I Have Had In Florida

Quite possibly the best pizza I’ve ever had in South Florida. How crazy is that?! South Florida? Of all places…

Seriously, with all the north east transplants down here that beat their fists into their chests when expressing pride in their love for the NY/NJ tri-state area you’d figure that one of them could make a decent pizza. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. In fact, one of my favorite pizza places in Fort Lauderdale actually hails from Pittsburg (Primanti Brothers).

However Pimanti Brothers cannot compete with the pizza I had last week. This pizza was almost perfect. The crust was crisp yet delicate. It never bended nor did it ever fold at different temps. The cheese was just the right amount and cooked to perfection. The sauce was sweet and full of flavor with just a sprinkle of spices. This pizza never burned my mouth, even at the very first bite yet it was still hot. It was the near perfect pizza (for South Florida).

It’s unfair to say that this pizza was near perfect for South Florida. This was damn near perfect for anywhere. The only reason I didn’t give this pizza a perfect rating was because the guy who made it told me his actual recipe for this style requires onions (sauteed or caramelized, not sure) and anchovies. Are you freakin’ kidding me? I’ve got to try that (love anchovies).

Where can you get this pizza. I’m sorry to say but I can’t state it here. The owner made this pie as a treat for PizzaExpert and myself.  However if you ever meet up with me, I can tell you where to get awesome freakin’ pizza. Seriously, it’s worth the drive and it’s worth the visit. Why? Because I’m tired of eating sub-par pizza in South Florida and I’m sure you are too. Oh and the price is very fair and welcoming (compared some overpriced pizza joints in South Florida).

I’m Walt and I’ve just had some damn near perfect pizza! And remember, when trying a new place, always order the cheese pizza. It’s the best way to know if a pizza place deserves repeat business.
