How We Can Stimulate the Economy: One Slice at a Time
All the brand new whiz-gizmo start-ups on the Web, all the fat ticket and functionally pointless sports cars, and all the Chef WhassnameontheFoodChannel cooking sets can’t compete with one thing when it comes to economic stimulation. Pizza.
Giants like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Starbucks will fail when the economy goes really sour. Your local Julio’s Pizza, Gamboni’s Pizzaria, Tucci’s, and whatever the local pizza oven is in your neighborhood will be there. Why? Because these businesses have always been there and they don’t fail.
Sure, they may not be “too big to fail” like some of the corporate merchandising giants, but they aren’t merging, up-sizing, downsizing, marginalizing, or whatever with abandon either. There are well over 76,000 pizza restaurants in America today. That, my friends, is second only to the National Guard in national defense.

Rosa’s Pizza Huntington New York

If you have read some of my prior posts, you will know that the 2 original Queens, NY Rosa’s locations have received tremendous approval ratings from me. Lately they have began to spread throughout the city and across the Island, slowly diluting their quality.

Pizza Hut in Deltona, FL
It’s been a very long time since I’ve had a pizza from Pizza Hut. After my latest experience with the pizza chain’s Deltona, FL location, I was reminded why it’s been so long!
When Pizza Hut delivers their overly greasy pizzas, shouldn’t safe food handling practices be extended to the time when the pizza is in the delivery driver’s car?

Franny’s Pizza Brooklyn

Ah the provolone pie! We went to Franny’s the other night and tried a uniquely deliciously pie. It had provolone piccante, tomato sauce, and onions.
It’s quite refreshing to see another cheese compete for the spot light on pizza’s center stage. Far too few pizzerias are willing to venture outside the mozzarella safe zone. This pie is an edible monument towards the glory that is provolone. Every other ingredient is (for better or worse) an aftertaste.

Edison Park Inn Pizza in Edison Park Chicago
Edison Park Inn, otherwise known as EPI, is home to wood-burning oven pizza. Throughout the years, I have always enjoyed eating EPI’s thin crust pizza, especially its “Special,” which consists of sausage, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms.

Roberta’s Pizza Bushwick Brooklyn

As you walk into Roberta’s you are overcome by the alluring smell of the basil-covered pizza in the wood burning oven. But unlike most fancy wood burning pizza joints, this place was packed with artsy, tattooed college students, and I felt like I was in the middle of a Weezer music video.
