Scarfone’s Pizza Coconut Creek, FL

Scarfone’s Pizza in Coconut Creek was a place I had wanted to try for a second time and post another review. The last couple of times I went there, I lost my notes and couldn’t post an accurate second account, so I had to wait for another chance to be in the area. Recently when I was at a charity event at World of Beer in The Promenade at Coconut Creek on a Sunday night, my friend Stevette brought some pizza back from Scarfone’s Pizza and it didn’t taste terrible. So after a long night of talking and raising money for a good cause, a group of 8 of us headed over to Scarfones at 9:05pm. I had the craving for a fresh pie after trying the slice in World of Beer.

When we walked into Scarfone’s Pizza in their Coconut Creek location, we asked to be seated for 8. The hostess said they closed at 9:30pm and they wouldn’t be able to accomodate us. Someone else I was with said “so, what does that have to do with anything, it is 9:05pm”

Amusement Park Pizza Fun Spot, Orlando Perky’s Pizza

The other day while in Orlando, I decided to take my son to check out the Go Karts, at Fun Spot. They have 4 adult tracks, and I have heard they were a lot of fun. When we arrived and started racing, all we heard about the excitement was accurate. There were almost no lines on this blistering day, full of humidity. The tracks were great, and we only got in trouble once for trying to spin each other out. After hours or horsing around, I asked my son if he was hungry and he said yes. We needed to escape the 96 degree heat anyways and get some air conditioning.

When inside we noticed they had some pizza, it was something they called Perky’s Pizza, so we decided to give it a go. We paid and sat down, where I had full view of how the pie was made. The crust was par baked, and as she applied the lite amount of sauce to it, and sprinkled what looks like some cafeteria style cheese on it, my hopes that this would be a good pie immediately diminished.

Plum Pizzeria & Bar New York City on 2nd and 10th

So I’m sitting with my friend Lawrence, a charter member of the pizza connoisseurs of all creation – Brooklyn Chapter, as we take in Plum on 2nd and 10th. When I told Lawrence where the best pizza in NY would be found (your neighborhood where you grew up), he quickly turned to Joe & Pat’s of Staten Island and L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn. When I told him mine was Brothers, he thought I grew up on Staten Island, home to another great Brother’s Pizza. I have to check with Dennis Koines, the owner of the Fresh Meadows location on this one for sure.

Well it’s a Plum time to start whittling away at NYC pizza as the Mad Greek begins the arduous process of locating the best pizza in NYC for 2011. I don’t have a lot of time as the year is drawing rapidly to a close.

Today we decided to eat at a place on 2nd ave. and 10th street named Plum Pizzeria & Bar. Plum Pizza makes an artfully crispy pizza, its an old style margherita pizza that was not what I expected when I ordered a Neapolitan (neapolitan). I think it’s important to make this distinction and stop the madness of epicurean confusion. What was served last night at Plum Pizza was a classic Queen Margherita (arguably named after my insanely vain Cypriot grandmother).

Gino’s Real New York Pizza Myrtle Beach, SC

When In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this last week for the holiday, I asked my friends who has the best pizza around the Myrtle Beach area. All of the responded with Gino’s Pizza! So, without hesitation I said let’s go. When we pulled up to Gino’s Real New York Pizza, I instantly said “now this  is totally what you want to see.” The place is clean and simple  You are first greeted by Gino himself to take your order.

WonderWorks Dinner Show Pizza, Orlando

Even though this is not Vegas, this was still a fun time. Outside the parks of Disney, and Universal, in Orlando there is an upside down building which houses WonderWorks. WonderWorks has the Outta Control Comedy Magic Show that seems to run twice daily starting at 6pm. We hadn’t heard many things about this show, but really didn’t want to do a typical Disney type of vacation before school started. The VisitOrlando website had this listed so we decided to give it a try, and I am quite happy we did. Not so much for the pizza, but the performance, but we will address all that below.

Giuseppe’s Pizza Sebastian, FL

While visiting some family in the Vero Beach / Sebastian area of Florida, I asked my nephew where we could grab some of the best pizza in the area. Unfortunately, due to the area he was raised in (dirt roads) he looked at me in a like “you gotta be kidding”, “of course it is Papa John’s” kind of way. For some reason, I knew I would have to embark on this pizza decision making journey alone and asked my wife to join me, and hoped for the best. I started to head east from where they live, since I am not sure you could get any more west, and told myself I would stop at the first pizza place I saw, and hadn’t tried. I noticed that Bizarro’s Pizza changed names to I think Danny’s Pizza, but didn’t care for it or its location next to the gas station. TJ’s Pizza never did much for me either. Just a bit past these two locations, I noticed Giuseppe’s Pizza. That is where we pulled in to have some pizza in Sebastian.

Giuseppe’s Pizza was pretty busy during this off hour. This was a good sign, that the locals choose to come here, (since I am not really sure others just randomly travel through the area) and even a better sign that it had been in business so long. Our server was extremely pleasant and we ordered a large pie. We spoke with some of the locals who assured us that this was probably the best pizza in Sebastian, FL. Bizarro’s was known to be good, but the family told me that once you leave their Melbourne Beach location, it tastes nothing like it should, and that this Sebastian location of theirs was not good.

Jonathan’s Corner Pizza Boca Raton, FL

I kept getting requests to review a new pizza place that opened many months ago in Boca Raton named Jonathan’s Corner. It replaced the former La Pizza (which was good), which sold to some other guy who closed after what seems to be only a couple of weeks in this dead corner of a shopping center near Mizner Park. Sometimes I wonder why business owners choose to open up pizza places, where others have failed. Speranza, Amato’s, Big Louie’s, and some others I am probably forgetting have all tried to open pizza places in this corridor of Boca Raton, and have been unsuccessful. Why bother opening yet another.

Jimbo and I decided to meet at Jonathan’s Corner to try some pizza, which was difficult, since Tucci’s Pizza is in walking distance. I always know I will get some of the best pizza in Boca Raton there, but I knew I had to venture out a little bit to try Jonathan’s Corner (before/if they closed like the others).

Fanatico Pizza Jericho, NY Best Pizza Jericho

All in the family! Talk about pizza and fine Italian food! Emelio’s of Commack (run by Emelio); Pasteria of Plainview(run by Mike); and Fanatico of Jericho, (run by John).

While there is more than plenty to choose from at the fine dining locale called Fanatico (Fanatic), being uno fanatico della abeetz, I passed up the parlor specials for a draw at the old school artesian with fixings from San Marzano.

What’s in a San Marzano margherita pie? Well, I’m glad you asked. For starters, San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella and fresh garlic and fresh dough and a fresh smile on your face when you eat Fanatico’s signature family style, oversized, artesian old school Margherita pizza.

At’s a Pizza Fort Lauderdale

I have passed by At’s a Pizza in Fort Lauderdale dozens of times while driving back and forth on Las Olas Blvd, and only went in once, like ten years ago after I moved here. I never went back, because it just didn’t taste good, and I was on a hunt to actually find the places that didn’t suck after experiencing some horrific pizza places in Boca Raton. Well the time came that Andy and Willie asked to go eat there one day for lunch, and I obliged.

The inside of At’s a Pizza in Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas Blvd. didn’t look like it had changed in the last decade. The only difference were the signs saying that they now had gluten free pizza, which I think was great, since so many people get excluded from pizza because of dietary issues. We ordered some slices and began our wait. I began to notice how empty the place was, and thought that it might have something to do with it being 1pm, but that doesn’t seem like an off hour. Oh well, maybe they do a strong dinner.

DaVinci’s Pizza Chestnut Ridge, Spring Valley, NY

Ok, so I didn’t stay long enough to check out the legend of Panza Pie as we bid farewell to Saratoga Springs this morning. However, on pulling into Chestnut Ridge around 1 pm, and held to a standard of try it when you see it, DaVinci’s Pizza of Chestnut Ridge (spring valley) was the pizza stop of the day.

It is interesting to note that when I arrived, a customer was just getting his personal 10″ pizza boxed with a finishing handful of Pecorino Romano grated cheese sprinkled amply over the entire pie, and then cut into 8 small slices. It looked really good and the chef asked if we wanted a pie like that, but the Mad Hungarian had the call for a plain good old fashioned thin crust neopolitan pie. I obliged and we watched the chef prepare one fresh.
