PizzaVolante Pizza Tweetup Miami Design District

pizzavolante.jpgpizza_volante.jpgThe other night we had an amazing time at PizzaVolante in the Miami Design District courtesy of our gracious and generous hosts.  When I arrived I was in awe that our host Jonathan Eismann (of Pacific Time) actually set up a table to display the pizzas we would eat.  Each pizza had a sign behind it explaining what the pizza was called and what it was made with.  Jonathan really went above and beyond my expectations.  He even decorated the table, and had someone standing there to serve us the pizza.  Jonathan = CLASS ACT

Pizza Rustica Lincoln Road South Beach Miami

pizza_rustica.jpgWe were heading to eat at Spris Pizza on Lincoln Road the other day when I asked the PizzaExpert if I could stop in and try a slice of the pizza at Pizza Rustica.  Since I no longer live in Florida, and have since relocated to NYC, I never got to try this place.  Many of my buddies brag about how amazing the pizza is, and I needed to check it myself.

Piola Pizzeria South Beach Miami Pizza

pizzapiola.jpgsprispizza.jpgMatt (mattspizza on the site) and I were in Miami and decided to check out a few places we both had never been to before. We went to Piola Pizzeria right at the end of Lincoln Road in South Beach. Located on 1625 Alton Road, between Lincoln and 16th St 305.674.1660, Piola Pizza, is a place that my Italian friend Davide says has some of the best pizza in Miami. When he says it with that fancy accent, and his fingers pointed in the air like some famous Italian statue, it makes it relatively impossible not to try it. Piola is deceivingly big inside.

Steve’s Pizza Best Pizza North Miami

Stevespizza.jpgSTEVES.JPGSteve’s Pizza is legendary in North Miami / Aventura.  This was one of the first places I tried down in Florida when I moved here.  A friend of mine told me that Steve’s even used to taste better before I moved here, but I find that hard to believe.  During my first visit to Steve’s Pizza, I remember thinking to myself that Florida pizza wasn’t so bad, and that perhaps I wouldn’t grow to miss the New York pizza I grew up eating.  Obviously Steve’s in an anomaly when it comes to this.

PizzaTweetup at Spris Pizza in Coral Gables

pizzatweetup.pngLast night over 60 pizza lovers converged onto Spris in Coral Gables, for some amazing thin crust pizza.  Spris Pizza is located in the heart of Coral Gables just a block or so north of the famous Miracle Mile.  Based upon the RSVP’s we received on www.pizzatweetup.com, we had expected only 50, but were delighted to see roughly 64 if I counted accurately.

Upon entering Spris before the event, I was greeted by the charming owner Julio, and the extremely outgoing server Eddie.  We went over the way I like to see these events operate, and they proceeded to show me the drink specials they would be offering this evening.  Being around Julio, you cannot help but notice how passionate he is about his food, and the experience a customer has when dining there.  He took me around back to show me the different pizzas that the chef was making, and the different toppings that went onto them, and the quality of these toppings.  Eddie, seemed like a firecracker that couldn’t wait to get started, and used the opportunity to make some new friends, as well as loyal customers.

spris.jpgspris_pizza.jpgBy 7:30, most people had arrived and ordered drinks.  I suggest that we start cooking up some pizza!  Julio decided to give us 3 pies with different toppings and 2 plain ones to start.  For the record, this was above and beyond what I requested from him, all I asked for was plain pizza, so here is another example of how far he goes to make sure everyone is happy.  When the pies came out of the oven they started to deliver them 5 at a time to the table.  Seems as fast as they put a pie down, it disappeared.  From the looks of it, our pizza lovers really seemed to enjoy the food they were being served.

Based upon the way the pies were cut, and the amount of pizzas that Julio served, we had enough pizzas to give each attendee 4-5 slices.  Seems like many enjoyed several of slices past this, since some people were left with only 1-2.  But whatever pizza they had tasted great.  Spris is known for their thin crust, European style pies.  You cannot get slices at this establishment, only individual pies.  They use a sparing amount of sauce (which I like) and a delicious blend of cheese, that bakes just perfectly.  The crust is crisp and sometimes a bit well done, which makes the first bite into it, a splendid experience.

The night seemed to fizzle out at about 10:30pm, and even the last pizza that was brought out, was devoured.  Everyone seemed to do right by the servers, who brought the free pizza to the tables.  Personally, I wish it was a bit cooler in there.  At times it seemed like I was in a sauna, and not a pizza place, but maybe it was because of the amount of people that were there.  After everyone left, it certainly cooled down.

Julio had such a nice time, that he is offering 20% off your bill at the location in Coral Gables, if you mention pizzatweetup to the server!  That is all you have to do, just say pizzatweetup and save 20% off of some amazing tasting food.  This special only runs until the 21st of July.  See you all next month.  Place yet to be determined.

Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza Miami – Best Pizza

amdiamopizza.jpgAndiamo! Brick Oven Pizza is part of the very pedestrian friendly 55th Street Station on Biscayne Blvd in Miami.  It is a very trendy looking Car Wash themed outdoor restaurant with a big patio and some indoor seating as well. Located on 5600 Biscayne Blvd 305.762.5751.

I often pass by when driving to or from Miami, and recently had the opportunity to check this place out after a recent Miami Herald “Tweetup.”  There is plenty of free parking available which is very nice to know.

Our group chatted with the owner for a while and could tell he was passionate about his pies, which we could see were cooking in a flaming open oven. We ordered a large New Yorker pizza (with no basil), and also wanted to try the 4 cheese and the Prosciutto w/ Arugula.  Let’s start with the regular.  It was delicious.  The crust was nicely charred and cooked through (a good thing).  The sauce was nice, and the perfect amount was used.  The cheese was nice, tasty and chewy.  Better than most pizza you can get in South Florida, I was a very happy boy.  I liked the other pizzas as well.  The 4-cheese was delicious, but the slice was heavy and it was hard for the dough to hold up such a heavy slice.  But if you like this style of pizza, you should dig in.  The prosiuctto was good as well, but there was too much Arugula for my taste, and this particular style of pizza I once sampled in Naples and it is hard to compete with that kind of memory.

Andiamo is a great Miami see and be seen kind of place in a really cool spot.  Dinner was with a fantastic bunch of people whom I didn’t know very well, but I am very much looking forward to seeing them all again and when I do I hope we can come back to Andiamo (I hear the cheesesteaks are good).  Andiamo gets 6 out of 8 slices (which on my scale equals a Very Good).

The Big Tomato Pizza Miami is Considered Gourmet?

big_tomato.jpgthe_big_tomato.jpgIf there is one thing I should have learned by now, it is never to leave the ordering of pizza to a non-expert.  That is exactly what happened on Saturday night when we went down to see some friends in Miami.  They ordered the pizza from The Big Tomato on 12447 S. Dixie Hwy 305.233.3344.  The host explained to me that the Miami Herald and New Times have praised this place and that I had to try it.  This is a reminder to everyone:  there is no reason to ever listen to a reviewer who has no pizza taste buds.  Many of the periodicals that claim to have food reviewers are just reviewing the place cause they paid to advertise in that publication.

That is not how we operate here.  We give full unbiased opinions about places, so you know where and where not to eat pizza.  When The Big Tomato Pizza arrived it appeard weird since they didn’t really come in boxes, but in paper bags.  They sent mini pies that look decent, with cheese pouring over the edges.  Upon my first bite, I could taste the sub-par ingredients.  Don’t get me wrong, I would order this ahead of Papa Johns or Domino’s anyday, but unfortunately I have to classify this pizza with the likes of Pizza Hut etc.  From what I understand, when you order them hot at the location they taste much better, which is normally the case with all pizza’s.  So before I just totally bash them, I will wait until I can eat it fresh.

The cheese, tasted rubbery, but might have been good hot.  The sauce I didn’t really care for, and what little they used I tried to wipe off.  The crust was shockingly decent, and has potential.  We will see during my in store visit!

The Big Tomato Pizza in Miami gets 3 out of 8 slices.
