Johnny’s Hot Pie Pizza Palm Beach Gardens, FL

A rather brilliant friend of mine who lives to the north told me about a pizza place he wanted me to try with him in Palm Beach Gardens. We both couldn’t figure out the name of the pizzeria, but after some research we figured out it was Johnny’s Hot Pie Pizza on Northlake Blvd, near Military Trail. We agreed on a date and I started the trek up there.
Johnny’s Hot Pie Pizza wasn’t exactly in a place I would think it would be. This plaza seemed more like the place you would find a UPS Store, a tutoring shop, and a psychologist. In its original location, Johnny’s is located right off clematis street in a hipper location with more foot traffic. This sleepy section of the gardens just didn’t seem to be the right choice of spots to open another.

Big C’s Downtown Pizza Fort Lauderdale

We were looking for a pizza place on Andrews Ave in Fort Lauderdale that we ate at once before and kind of liked, after going to a convention at the Broward Convention Center. Yes it was exxxotica, but that is besides the point. Based upon the location, I thought we arrived at the right place, but I just didn’t think the names matched up. We put money in the meter and headed inside anyways since hunger was becoming an issue.
After walking into Big C’s Pizzeria it became quite clear we weren’t at the right place. A little research showed that we meant to eat at Pie-Zan’s Pizza but miscalculated the location. Man am I sorry we made this error.

Osteria Acqua & Farina Pizza Fort Lauderdale

A friend of mine named Eric that I haven’t seen for years posted a photo on his Facebook wall the other day that looked delicious. It was a picture of a pizza from a place in Fort Lauderdale called Osteria Acqua Farina and I was amazed I hadn’t heard of this place before.
I reached out to Eric and asked him where it was and if it was as good as it looked. He responded by saying it was in his top 3 pizza places in South Florida, so I knew I would have to try it. After suggesting to him that we meet up to try it, we ultimately met there the other day.

		Luigi’s Pizza East Setauket, NY

We passed by Luigi’s Pizzeria in East Setauket while were going to see a town I had never heard of before after living in Long Island for decades named Strong’s Neck. Along the way I got hungry and saw it located in a shopping center at the stop light we were stuck at. We pulled in to see if this pizza was any good.
Luigi’s Pizza was clean and nice inside. After walking past several booths I arrived at the pizza counter which had a nice variety of pies behind the glass enclosure. A not so friendly young man asked me what I wanted and I ended up ordering a regular slice and a Sicilian slice. I wanted garlic knots too but I didn’t see them displayed. This is a weird way to try to sell people on items. Hiding your knots doesn’t make customers crave them when they see them. Luigi’s takes the hidden approach to their food I guess.

Villa Rosano Italian Restaurant Boca Raton Pizza

Back when the original owners were married, Cucina Rosano on the Boca/Delray border was one of my favorite places to eat. The food was very high priced, but it was quality and seldom disappointed. After the divorce the owner kept Villa Rosano out in North Western Boca Raton, and his ex wife kept Cucina Rosano, which she renamed Cucina Mio. Cucina Mio didn’t last long (my entire family actually got sick after eating there one night) but Villa Rosano is still opened. We decided to take a try of the pizza and pasta there the other day to see if it compared.
Villa Rosano in Boca Raton wasn’t too busy on the night we went in. We were placed in the back of the restaurant in what could be one of the most uncomfortable seating arrangements in Boca Raton. The tables were literally on top of each other as you can see in the photo below. We could barely get into our seats without hitting the table behind us, and could barely sit with all the chairs smooshed into the small area. What the heck were they thinking there?

		Paolo’s of Boca Raton Pizza

A new place decided to take a chance with the store front that used to house Authentic Brooklyn Pizza. For starters I was happy to see that someone finally put up a sign in this location. The previous owner for some reason never wanted to spend the money and brand himself with one.
My friend Barry suggested I tried this place and called it the best pizza he had tried in Boca Raton. Since Barry never called me with such an outrageous claim like this before, I rushed on over to Paolo’s of Boca Raton the first chance I could.

		Tony Dell’s Pizza Boca Raton

When I first moved to Boca Raton, friends would tell me I needed to try this place out in western Boca Raton called Tony Dell’s, and if I did I would find a place that reminded me of Little Italy in New York City. They described it as the sort of hole in the wall Italian Restaurant that opens when it wants, and has people lining up to eat there. I drove past it a couple of times and it appeared empty, which it turns out on many occasions it was. Tony Dell’s had very strict and odd hours, so the place appeared closed more than it was open.
That didn’t stop my friend Rob from swearing that we would have to go together and that I would have some of the best pizza in Boca Raton. Like many plans with Rob, excuses came and we never got the opportunity to go experience Tony Dell’s before it was put up for sale.  Recently a new owner took over, regulated the hours and decided to take a try at producing some quality Italian Food in Western Boca Raton.

D.O.C.G Cosmopolitan Hotel Pizza Las Vegas

It is hard to expect much when it comes to pizza in Las Vegas, especially when you just found the secret pizzeria in the Cosmopolitan Hotel and it blew you away. We decided to make a reservation at D.O.C.G upstairs and try out the offerings they had. Luckily enough we made our reservations early, since this place seems to pack up around the weekend evenings.
D.O.C.G has an outdoor eating area, and although I was well aware we were indoors, it really did give me the feeling of being on an outdoor walkway enjoying a meal, that is if we got a seat outside. We ended up inside and I noticed they had a pizza on the menu. I ordered a Margherita and prayed for the best.

Spadini’s Pizza Boca Raton, Mizner Park

It didn’t take long for Mizner Park Pizza to wave the white flag, and sell the pizzeria. The previous owner Mike was a nice enough guy, but just didn’t seem to possess all the necessary skills for running a pizza joint in such a competitive area. For those who ate there a few times, it was pretty evident that the place probably didn’t have long to survive.
A couple of months ago I heard the location was for sale in Boca Raton, but wondered who would buy this doomed spot, and if they would continue offering average pizza at hefty prices and hope to take away business from the other half dozen or so pizzerias located in the immediate area. Well my questions were answered when Spadini’s Pizza opened up shop and decided to try to make this a profitable location for a change.
