Alfredo’s 2 Pizza Ridge, NY

We headed over to Ridge, Long Island, which once again is a town I don’t think I have ever been to prior. Doesn’t seem like much is happening in Ridge, which is maybe why we never ventured out these ways. After passing several 55 and over communities along the way, we stopped at Alfredo’s 2 Pizza. I am not even sure if there is an Alfredo’s Pizza 1 anywhere, but this was was named 2.

We parked in front and wandered in. Alfredo’s 2 Pizza is nothing fancy inside, but then again it isn’t anything extravagant from the outside either. It is the type of place you would expect to find in a small town. The counter was to the right, and booths to the left, so we headed to the right and placed our order.

OIP Pizza Boca Raton Near FAU

Not to be confused with the other OIP – Original Italian Pizza, which is located out east in Boca Raton, this OIP is located just outside the campus of Florida Atlantic University, in the research park. Prior to being OIP, this location housed Rock City Pizza (or something like that, I never got around to trying it before they closed) and prior to that it was Annie’s Pizza which was pretty good.

I always imagined that this has to be one of the toughest locations in Boca Raton to open a pizza joint. As I previously stated in the Annie’s review a while back, “Nestled between the Boca Raton airport and a bunch of research companies is this surprisingly busy pizza shop”. You literally could pass this place a hundred times and not know it was behind the building that faces the street. Anyways, Annie’s Pizza did a nice business there and built it up to a point where they could sell it, which didn’t work out so well for the new owners. OIP must have came along and scooped this location up in hopes that the new FAU Football stadium and traffic would help build a pizza business.

The Varsity Sports Grill Pizza Ft. Smith, AR

Found myself once again traveling for work and landed in a place called Ft. Smith Arkansas. Beautiful part of the country. Was looking to grab a few drinks and see the local scene and I wandered upon The Varsity Sports Grill. After going in I couldn’t believe that this sports bar had a wood fired pizza oven. It became evident what I would have with a few of my brewskis tonight.

The Varsity Sports Grill is located in Downtown Ft. Smith, AR on Garrison Ave. It is a typical sports bar with a bar area, with nothing really out of the ordinary (outside of that pizza oven). There is family seating area and even a few pool tables. Luckily they had a few pinball machines and old school video game machines for me to play while waiting. It is very spacious and once again, to the surprise a wood oven for pizza.

Cataffo’s Pizza Stony Brook, NY

Although it was the tail end of one of my days touring some random pizza places on Long Island, there was always a spot which is hard to read from the road but is called Cataffo’s Pizza, I wanted to try near Stony Brook. I had seen for years but never went in. Although my folks don’t reside too far from there, they never went in to give it a shot either. So on the way home we pulled along side the building and went into Cataffo’s Pizza.

Cataffo’s Pizza in Stony Brook was nothing fancy, and looked more like the place catering to a college crowd rather than a place for family dinners. The place was pretty empty when we went, but I believe we went on kind of an off hour, so I cannot hold anything against them for that. We ordered a couple of slices and some garlic knots and began to wait.

Regina Pizzeria Boston Could Be The Best Pizza in Boston

20120610-150937.jpg

In preparing for our family trip to Boston, we watched a lot of the food network. A particular episode of Food Wars featured Regina Pizzeria in Boston, and I just knew we would go there at some point.

Since we were there on the same day as other visitors from the South Florida area that we hail from, Lebron James and Dwyane Wade, we just had to get tickets to see Game 6 of the playoffs (thankfully the Heat won the series). Looking for a place to eat in the north end of Boston, near the Gahden, we decided on Pizzeria Regina.

Geppetto Restaurant Pizza Bethesda, MD

When most people have a “deep thought”, they’re usually pondering the mysteries of the universe.  When I have a “deep thought”, it’s more likely to be about which “deep” dish pizza is the best in the universe.  (Or at least locally since I’m too poor to fly to Chicago for dinner).

Since 1977 one of the best thick crusted pizzas in the DC area has been found at Geppetto Restaurant at the Wildwood Shopping Center in Bethesda, MD.  Named after Pinocchio’s maker, you’ll find puppet references at the entrance next to a picture of President Clinton eating one of their pies.  It’s hard to believe they’ve been pumping out these tasty Sicilian pies since the days when I learned to spell “p.i.z.z.a.” while singing the letters along with Sesame Street.

The Slice Pizza Shirley, NY

After leaving Farmingville, Long Island with my buddy, he asked if I wanted to head further out and try a couple of places in some other towns around Long Island that I haven’t tried pizza in. Of course I was up for the opportunity, so we headed out to a town called Shirley, and stopped at a place called The Slice.

The Slice isn’t necessarily the type of place I would have stopped by myself. It just didn’t look too appealing from the roadway. The Slice serves pizza out of an old stand alone building, that looks like the type of place that previously housed some sort of ice cream stand. Since this was probably my first time in Shirley, I have no idea what was here prior though, if anything.

Nick’s New Haven Pizza Boca Raton, FL

Well over a year ago, a fellow foodie and I went to try Nick’s New Haven Style Pizza in Lake Worth, when it was still located downtown. Maybe it was just the time of day we went, or maybe the fact we had several pizzas before we got there, but neither of us were impressed with Nick’s Pizza or apizza (as they call it) at all. Eventually they closed the Lake Worth location, and decided to open instead in Boca Raton, since the crowd here must know even less about pizza than they did in Lake Worth (or they would have remained opened there). I mean, open a fancy place in Boca Raton, spend lots of money, put some cute girls behind the bar and hostess stand, and voila, a place has to succeed.

A couple of guys and I went to Nick’s New Have Style Pizza during the first week it opened at its new Boca Raton location, just to try the pizza out first. Initially we ordered a plain pie and hoped for the best.

There is no doubt that Nick’s New Haven Pizza spared no expense on remodeling the place, as it was decorated immaculately. They really took their time making this pizza joint an inviting and comfortable setting. To the west end of the restaurant is their enormous Pizza ovens, which left me salivating for the pizza that was about to come out.

Pizza Corner Medford, NY

Another spot on Long Island I spent just about zero time in, is a town called Medford. During my last visit up to Long Island I went with a friend to a bakery he liked and I noticed a pizza place in the corner of the shopping center simply called Pizza Corner. Pizza Corner in Medford didn’t look too bad from the outside, so I ventured in and we ordered a couple of slices.

My friend got a regular slice and I got a Sicilian slice which looked good from behind the display case. It appeared cheesy, and light, and I was looking forward to trying it. We considered getting a couple of garlic knots, but didn’t find those particularly appealing from the counter, so we passed and just waited for the slices to come out of the oven.

Pizza Stop Farmingville, Long Island

Growing up in the middle of Long Island, we never really made it too far out east. Maybe to take a ride to Montauk or The Hamptons every now and then, but we seldom, if ever got off the LIE and saw some of the smaller towns. I do not think I even heard of a place like Farmingville Long Island until my parents took me to see a Lou Christie concert out there like 25 years ago.

Once I moved to Florida my friend Gary told me he grew up there, as well as my friend Lenny, so I got intrigued what this little town in Long Island looked like. During a recent visit to one of my favorite pizza places in Ronkonkoma (Albert’s Pizza) I asked the owner if he could take me on a ride around the area. As we drove down the block from his pizza place, I quickly noticed Pizza Stop in a little plaza in Farmingville, and asked him if I could run in to try a slice out.
