PL8 Pizza Fort Lauderdale, FL

Before heading to the Sleigh Bells concert at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale with Andy, we decided to grab a bite to eat since we were early, and didn’t expect to find parking so quickly. Andy said he is a fan of this place in downtown Lauderdale called PL8 which has a bunch of appetizer types of food that tables can share. Like the  $4 parmesan wedges that are really just a potato and a half dressed with some cheese. Yay! I feel so happy paying $4 for 1.5 potatoes, what a deal. Or the $4 Brick Oven Garlic Bread, which ended up being nothing more than pizza dough with some basil and oil. Anyways, I decided to get the pizza there, but first let’s start off with what happened when we arrived.

PL8 in Fort Lauderdale seemed pretty busy on this evening. We expected a wait but we were happily surprised to find out there currently was no wait from the hostess, and that we were the next people in line. We asked how long and she told us “since you are next in line it could be about 10-15 minutes”. Since that wasn’t a long time we walked around to look at the other places nearby and came back to wait for a bit. When we returned to PL8 we couldn’t be more ecstatic to see a table getting up.

101 Ocean Pizza Lauderdale by the Sea

It was Christmas day and we were bored so we took a ride south on A1A. There weren’t many places open to eat at, so when we got near A1A and Commercial Blvd. we stopped to eat since there was some action. I originally wanted to eat at a place across the street from 101 Ocean, but my wife thought that 101 Ocean looked nicer and pushed me to eat there instead.

101 Ocean in Lauderdale by the Sea was a pretty decent looking place. There was a nice looking bar to the right, which was packed with locals and French Canadians. We sat down and got greeted by a server who seemed sweet, but not really interested in discussing the menu with us.

Slice Pizza Fort Lauderdale – New Owners

I hadn’t been back to Slice Pizza in downtown Fort Lauderdale since the owner overcharged me for an item we didn’t have and didn’t honor the 15% off coupon.Recently I heard the place sold, and I was pretty happy to hear this. The previous owner was not a people person, and there wasn’t a time I went there that he didn’t try to over charge me for something. Whether it was a topping I didn’t have, or not automatically give me a special during the proper hours, I always found a discrepency. Many others wrote to me asking why he ran his business this way. So I know I was not targeted, as I think I had about a half dozen or so customers send us messages asking us to review this place since they were overcharged and didn’t realize it until they got home.

Danny’s Pizza Fort Lauderdale

UNFORTUNATELY DANNY’S IS UNDER CONTRACT TO SELL AND WILL NOT BE RE-OPENING.

Recently I went to go see Stars perform at The Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale. Amazing show! We arrived a bit early, and waited for Jessie to show up, so I could give her a couple of the tickets I had gotten for her. While walking through the parking lot, and trying to avoid the light rain drops that were falling, I noticed there was a new pizza place located in the decrepit plaza. Several years ago, around the time I met The French Fry Fairy and Burger Beast, I was told there was a really good pizza place on the corner of US-1 and Oakland Park road, in Fort Lauderdale. One night I drove down to find it, thinking it was in the Southwest corner of the intersection, but couldn’t find any pizza in the plaza, so I gave up and went down the road to Kitchenetta instead since the plaza was dimly lit, and kind of creeped me out. Turns out, the readers who suggested I try the good pizza in this area, actually meant the Southeast part of the intersection, which was Times Square Pizza. We had previously reviewed it and found it to be pretty good. Anyways, since I knew there wasn’t a pizza place in this run down plaza a couple of years ago, I figured this Danny’s Pizza would be worth trying, just to see if it was yet another pizza place trying to exploit a late night crowd that didn’t have many options around by charging them $4 a slice for sub-par pizza.

Zio’s Pizza Fort Lauderdale, FL

While driving down Federal Highway last week in Fort Lauderdale, I spotted a pizza place in a corner of a shopping center. It wasn’t the nicest kind of shopping center, which was evident by the presence of Metro PCS store and the like, but sometimes those little places are the best. I pulled into the shopping center and searched my email to see if anyone ever recommend this pizza place named Zio’s. I was surprised when I found about a half dozen emails suggest that I review this place. That was enough of a push to get me in the door of Zio’s Pizza.

Zio’s is one of those miraculous pizza places that let you order your slices from the counter and bring them to your booth yourself. I commend you for this guys. You obviously started out this tasting right, and got me in a good mood. Zio’s Pizza is EXTREMELY clean inside, even with their outdated decor. The kitchen is wide open for anyone to look into, and watch as the food is prepared.

At’s a Pizza Fort Lauderdale

I have passed by At’s a Pizza in Fort Lauderdale dozens of times while driving back and forth on Las Olas Blvd, and only went in once, like ten years ago after I moved here. I never went back, because it just didn’t taste good, and I was on a hunt to actually find the places that didn’t suck after experiencing some horrific pizza places in Boca Raton. Well the time came that Andy and Willie asked to go eat there one day for lunch, and I obliged.

The inside of At’s a Pizza in Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas Blvd. didn’t look like it had changed in the last decade. The only difference were the signs saying that they now had gluten free pizza, which I think was great, since so many people get excluded from pizza because of dietary issues. We ordered some slices and began our wait. I began to notice how empty the place was, and thought that it might have something to do with it being 1pm, but that doesn’t seem like an off hour. Oh well, maybe they do a strong dinner.

WorstPizza.com on NPR Today

We are psyched to have been on NPR today discussing pizza. We were heard on WLRN in Miami. Unfortunately due to policies, we were not able to specifically mention the names of the places during the broadcast, and many readers and listeners have asked us to publish the names of the two places that we said we really liked.  Although there are many great places throughout the listening area, we tried to focus on only a couple that quickly came to mind. If we had more time we would have mentioned dozens of other places throughout the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area, so we apologize to the places that we love, but still managed to neglect. Here are the two places:

#PizzaTweetup at Pizza D’Angelo Fort Lauderdale

Thanks to everyone for another successful and fun #pizzatweetup. Although it was quite hot in the place due to so many pizza lovers, the owner and staff of Pizza D’Angelo in Fort Lauderdale served up enough pizza to fill the bellies of over 65 attendees, and needless to say the pizza was great! It was awesome to see so many new faces in attendance as well as old friends. This is what Tweetups are for, not to try to rip off those in attendance, but rather to provide them with a reason to gather, and have an overall good time. I know I for one, had a blast. If you have any photos you would like for me to share on this post, please go ahead and send them in and I will be happy to display them and give you the proper credit.

Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas

Ever since Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza opened up in Fort Lauderdale, and grew, it seems like everyone thinks they can hop on the bandwagon. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza on Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale is the latest of places to open in hopes of cashing in on the coal craze. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza I believe is owned by the same guys who serve some pretty great food at Tuscan Grill a little further west. Luigi’s Coal Oven Pizza is a cute place tucked away in the back of a parking lot next to Rocco’s Tacos. It was a quaint place, housing only 8 tables. I had tremendous hopes for this new place since the pizza at Tuscan Grill is pretty darn good with a wood oven.

Lets first look at why they might have chosen a coal oven to begin with.  Unlike a wood oven, cooking pizza with coal oven should come with a tremendous investment in first understanding the proper operation of the oven.  A coal fire is much harder to start (get hot) and is more difficult to manage than a wood fire or gas burner. Even the simple aspect of getting anthracite coal to burn right requires an ignition source in excess of 900 degrees (F) that is usually provided by a bed for burning charcoal or wood. Dry wood by comparison, burns more quickly and starts burning at around 450 F. Coal has roughly twice the heat/energy potential of wood (13,000 BTUs per pound for coal versus roughly 6,500 BTUs per pound for wood) so accessing and managing its potential energy when and where you need it can be challenging. (courtesy of woodstone-corp). So just hiring some regular pizza guy to run this oven is not enough to produce quality pizza. Just because you can cook with wood, does not mean you can cook with coal.
