Museum of Discovery and Science Pizza Fort Lauderdale

Was at the Museum of Discovery & Science in Fort Lauderdale (954) 467-6637.  After spending a few hours at the museum Sunday, I started to get hungry.  Sometimes eating is more exciting then walking around a museum.  At first thought all they had was popcorn, but then found a Subway Sandwich concession.  But they didn’t have any toasted sandwiches and I like my food hot.  Then I saw it, one lonely slice of pizza.  As hungry as I was, I wanted to like it.  But I can find nothing redeeming about it except that it was hot and that it was actually pizza.  However, if I was at the museum again, I probably will get another slice due to the fact I am never one to turn down a slice.  1 of 8 slices.

Boca Raton Ale House Pizza

Let me just start by saying the Boca Raton Ale House isn’t known for pizza, and is actually a great place to go and watch the games.  Went there yesterday with my son to meet Big G and Keith, and watch some football.  This Boca Raton Ale House is located on 1200 Yamato Rd
Boca Raton, FL 33431 (561) 988-9142 Phone.

When my son asked me if he could get a pizza from the kids menu, I of course obliged.  Why not watch the games and review pizza at the same time.  What a beautiful combination!

When the pizza came, it looks half way decent, and was certainly hot.  I am going to try and be fair to this pizza since it isn’t on the regular menu and is only available for kids, but none the less, since it is on a menu it needs to be reviewed.  The dough was undercooked, but the top was nice and hot.  The sauce had an ok taste to it, and all in all I was able to finish it.  I guess this pizza could be compared to Subway Pizza, or Pizza Hut.  It is better then Peace a Pizza located in the same shopping center, and comparable to Subway.

Definitely do not go out of your way to eat pizza there, but if you happen to be there and want to try a slice of your childs pizza, you won’t be totally disappointed either.  The top of the pizza is quite hot so do not let your little ones bite into it!  The Boca Ale House in Boca Raton gets 3 out of 8 slices.

Digino’s Pizza Lake Mary Florida

Someone recommended that I give Digino’s Pizza located at 3895 Lake Emma Rd # 151
Lake Mary, FL 32746 (407) 333-2733 Lake Mary, FL a try. I did and it was an okay pizza experience. It wasn’t the best pizza ever, but was far from the worst.

When I first picked up the regular pie, it didn’t look too attractive when I opened the box. It appeared that there was way too much cheese on the pie, with a small puddle of sauce showing through in the center. Looks can sometimes be deceiving though, because I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and tasted the pizza.

The cheese and sauce turned out to be well proportioned, with just the right amount of each. My only two complaints was that I found the sauce to be a little too sweet, and the crust could have been a little bit thinner to get more like true New York Style Pizza as advertised in the restaurant’s window. Otherwise, it was an okay pizza. It was far from the best pizza I have eaten, but I have had many far worse pizzas as well.

On my second slice, I decided to add some toppings that hardly anyone else will eat. I put about three cloves of fresh chopped garlic and almost half of a can of anchovies on the slice. I have discussed the my thoughts on anchovies elsewhere in the past, and I will restate here that they are one of the most unappreciated pizza toppings out there that would probably be more popular if more people would be willing to actually try an anchovy topped pizza. The slice was stinky, but it was good!

Based on a scale of 1 to 8, I would give Digino’s a nice average rating of 4 out of 8 slices

Bogart’s Pizza at Muvico in Boca Raton

Finally had a chance to go out with the wife alone on a sort of “date” the other night. We went to go see the movie Burn After Reading, which was playing at the Muvico Palace 20 in Boca Raton.

The movie was decent, but we were starving after it ended, and since Boca Raton doesn’t have much in the offering of places to eat after midnight, it didn’t look promising. When we were about to leave the Muvico Palace, we realized that this location has a full restaurant and bar upstairs, where you would enter for the Premier Seating section. This section is also known as the Lexus Premier Level.

Bogart’s, which is a Rapoport’s Restaurant, opened within the past year or so. I figured this would be the same kind of food which is served at the concession stand, so my hopes for a decent meal were not promising. When I saw pizza on the menu, I figured it would only be right to try a slice from a new place. Obviously, I knew I wouldn’t be happy with it, since it was 12:30am, and once again I was at a movie theater.

When the pizza came out, I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance. When I took my first bite, I was in shock. The pizza was actually pretty damn good. It was super thin, and crispy, with tasty sauce (not too heavy) and some quality tasting cheese. The pie was cooked perfectly and was hot when served. I managed to finish the whole individual pie.

Bogart’s, you managed to make me actually want to come back again. This is not something I normally say about pizza, especially when I was prepared for the worst. If you can consistently serve the quality and consistency of the pizza I had the other night, I might even come there without seeing a movie! I will give Bogart’s in the Muvico, in Boca raton 6 out of 8 slices.

CPK – California Pizza Kitchen in Boca Raton

I don’t really like the whole concept of chain restaurants, but they are growing on me.  And I never understood California Pizza Kitchen.  But I now realize outside of New York there just aren’t decent options.  So I am enjoying the new California Pizza Kitchen in the Boca Raton Town Center Mall.  The key is to not get the traditional margherita or pepperoni pizza that you would get in your local pizzeria.  That’s not what CPK is about.  Its about reinventing pizza.  I had a pizza that was half buffalo wing and half Mexican (carne Asada).  They were both delicious.  The crust was a better base than any sandwich could be.  The toppings were fresh, bursting with flavor, and I couldn’t get enough.  I went back a few days later and got the same pie again.  I don’t think of it as pizza; I consider it another food item altogether.  If I am not comparing it to New York pizza, it gets 5 out of 8 slices.

Gio’s Cafe in Sanford, FL

This is the inaugural review from one of our new Experts MB

I ate at Gio’s Cafe I in Sanford, FL for dinner after reading a positive review about the restaurant in an Orlando Sentinel review. It was a Greek/Italian restaurant which sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a try.

I was actually expecting more Greek food and less Italian. The Greek food probably took up a quarter of the menu, while Italian took up the remaining three-quarters. The Greek food seemed kind of overpriced for what was being offered, so we ordered garlic knots and pizza. The newspaper had good stuff to say about both items, so I was expecting an okay meal.

The garlic knots came out first and were okay, but they could have definitely used triple the amount of garlic that was given.

The pizza soon followed, and I definitely disagreed with the Orlando Sentinel review. The newspaper called Gio’s pizza impressive. I thought it was one of the worst pizzas I’ve eaten in a while. The crust was a little thick for my liking, but that’s just based on my personal preference. My real issue here was with the cheese on the pizza. While the pizza was hot, all of the molten cheese poured off of the crust onto the plate. As it cooled, the cheese solidified, but it didn’t stick to the rest of the pizza. The entire mass of cheese on each slice would pull off leaving a sheet of hot cheese hanging out of my mouth with every bite. The solidified lump of cheese was strangely chewy and dense, and was still stuck in my throat several hours later. I’m not exactly sure what Gio’s Cafe did (or didn’t do) to make the cheese on their pizza turn out this way, but it was definitely not a good thing.

Another issue that I had wasn’t exactly pizza related, but instead was something the restaurant wouldn’t sell me because I ordered pizza. I wanted a side salad as an appetizer, but according to the waiter, side salads were only available if I was eating an entree. Otherwise, my only option would be to buy a much more expensive meal-sized salad. Perhaps I should have ordered an entree though. I’ve found I’m almost always happy with spanakopita, and I’m sure it would have been better than the pizza…

I give Gio’s Pizza in Sanford, Florida, 1 out of 8 Slices

Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza Boca Raton

One of the perks about writing for worstpizza is talking about pizza with the rest of the staff.  That’s how I came to know about Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza.  And so far, I like it.  The pizza is about as authentic as New York pizza gets down here.  The right amount of sauce, cheese and crust.  It’s not heavy or leaden like some other place that ‘claim” to be of New York descent.  And it is a casual place to stop by for a slice if your in the area.

Remembering this extremely long name is another story, good thing I am only focusing on the pizza. The pizza is as good as Nino’s so its really a matter of location when trying to decide between the two.  I give it 6 of 8 slices.  Hear that Nino’s, add counter service and you get 6 of 8 from me!!!  You increase a full point!

Carini’s Pizza Wildwood New Jersey

While vacationing in Wildwood, NJ this summer, I noticed my hotel littered with boxes from Carini’s Pizza. Being a curious pizza eater, I naturally had to find out why by trying some.

Carini’s Pizza was pretty good. Especially when hot and fresh. It wasn’t world class pizza, but it worked and served its purpose. It made me sad for the state of pizza in my beloved south Florida. What passes for OK in New Jersey would probably be King in Florida.

On my last night I went in to the restaurant and noticed it was very large. They do a brisk business and I will be sure to go back if I ever return to Wildwood.  I will give Carini’s Pizza in Wildwood Crest, NJ 5 out of 8 slices.

Sorrento Pizza Wildwood New Jersey

Ahh New Jersey in summer. The ONLY thing I miss about NJ is the boardwalk. The rides, games, people, lights and oh yes, the pizza. Is Pizza a beach food? Oh yeah. However, most of it is garbage.

It’s appropriate that we talk about them here at the offices of Worst Pizza. We stopped at Sorrento II Pizza, because my kids just couldn’t hold off long enough for Mack’s Pizza, a Wildwood institution. So we settled on Sorrento. Vile.

The sauce was nasty. The cheese leaden and the crust hot and cold at the same time. It sounds physically impossible, but I swear its true. The staff barely spoke English, but the language spoken certainly is not Italian. I always wonder if someone who makes bad pizza knows he makes bad pizza. In this case Sorrento probably knows they make bad pizza, but obviously does not care. 2 out of 8 slices.
