Costello’s Pizza Jupiter, FL

My wife and I never really eat at the pizza place in our Abacoa neighborhood named Costello’s, to us it’s an after thought but last night we were coming home late and wanted a bite, so we went to eat there and try it out.

We ordered a large plain pizza pie and brought it home got out the plates and each grabbed a slice. On first bite it was thick with a hint of spice, my wife said “there was too much oregano in the sauce”. To me the crust was somewhat dry and the flavor overbearing.

As a fan of pizza, there’s no such thing as a bad slice just some that far exceed others. This slice fell somewhere in the low range of potential favorites. The big question would I go back? Depends, do I feel like driving.

Costello’s Pizza in Jupiter gets 4 out of 8 slices.

Old Town Pizza Portland, Or

Most people I speak to around Portland rave about Old Town Pizza. A simple look at the front page of their website reveals: “Something to Experience before You Die”; “Visited by the Tonight Show and Rachel Ray’s Tasty Travels“.

So what are my thoughts about Old Town Pizza in Portland? It’s a really nice building and space. Oh, and it’s a really nice building and space.

I went with their normal crust, which is kind of “Boboli-like” in nature; they now offer a “new thin crust” but it only comes in a smaller version. (what?).

Sbarro Pizza Is Preparing For Bankruptcy

This shouldn’t shock anyone who has had their pizza in the malls recently, but according to the Wall Street Journal, the fast-food pizza chain Sbarro Inc may file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as soon as next week,

Sbarro  is supposedly in talks with a group of hedge funds holding its senior debt to provide about $35 million in so-called debtor-in-possession financing to help keep the chain operating in bankruptcy, the Journal said.

A Sbarro representative was not immediately available for comment, although I will keep trying to get someone. Many are familiar with Sbarro, and for those from Long Island, you will remember how Sbarro took over many Umberto’s locations. They then named them Mama Sbarro’s, and later ended up selling them back to Umberto’s. It was hard to miss Sbarro Corporate building in Melville as you passed by it, and they had a huge presence for a while. Personally I always questioned how people could even eat their pies.

Sbarro is not alone in going Bankrupt, recently we have seen plenty of other establishments go under, including Fuddruckers and Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse. My parents loved Charlie Brown’s and the place always seemed packed, so I am amazed they went under.

You can only serve crappy pizza at excessive prices for so long! Just look at the photo $3.38 for a sub-par slice.

PizzaTweetup at Grande Pizza Co. Boca Raton

We are happy to announce that we will be having the first #pizzatweetup of 2011.  Sorry about the delays all, but I have been a bit sidetracked.  I am more apologetic to all the amazing pizza places who are currently on the waiting list, and missed out for the first couple of months of this year.

On April 11, 2011 Grande Pizza Co. in Boca Raton has invited us all to come in and enjoy FREE pizza all night. If you haven’t tried their Detroit Style Pizza aka Crusty Cheese Pizza, you are missing out on one delicious pizza. Grande Pizza in Boca Raton is one of the few places in all of Florida to make pizza this way. We will get plenty of these pies, as well as plenty regular and Sicilian Pizza to go around.

There will be numerous drink specials, and Grande Pizza will also be giving away several gift certificates to attendees who have tweets they loved.

I look forward to see you all there, and I am sure it will be as amazing as all the previous events we have had.

Here is the link to RSVP  ———->   RSVP HERE

If you do not have a Twitter account, please leave me a comment here and I will email you back if we have an opening still.

Give Pizza a Chance Portland, OR

Mrs. BurgerDogBoy has been suggesting I get to “Give Pizza A Chance“ since she read about it in Portland Monthly. Funny, I hadn’t tried it, I hit that food pod quite a bit. In the pic of the stand, you can see “Swamp Shack” next to it, some great Creole food, and next to that, “Tabor“, who makes an excellent schnitzelwich!

On to the pizza. I ambled by shortly before noon, and perused the pies on offer, the big rack has a stack of ‘em, with little handmade signs describing their toppings.

I went with a slice of their all meat pie, pepperoni, sausage, C-bacon. It’s a thin crust effort (tho they have deep dish as well), and they boast about their organic flour and locally sourced meats. A little sign out front says the pepperoni is now from Otto’s. Nice.

Whole Foods Pizza Crust Whole Wheat

Mrs. Burgerdogboy wandered thru the Irvington Whole Foods the other day, after a nearby appointment for her work. She picked me up a two-pack (I always make a bad “Tupac” pun, just to make her groan) of Whole Food’s refrigerated Whole Wheat pizza crusts.

Being a guy, and not prone to following directions on any package, the first one I made didn’t turn out as well as expected – I baked it on the pizza stone, which, with some crusts, ends up having a negative effect, to wit, the stone traps moisture in the dough, re-releases it as steam, and the crust does not get as crispy as the manufacturer probably intended. Nevertheless, the first one had a certain amount of crunch, tantamount to a pizza crust that resembled one made with matzoh cracker dough – which I did not find terribly unappealing, actually.

Setauket Pastaria Pizza Setauket, Long Island

My sister was hungry in the afternoon and she took me to a place that has some amazing midday specials. Setauket Pastaria is located in the Kohl’s shopping center in Setauket Long Island. The pizza didn’t look exceptional in the case, but I figured I would take a chance and try a slice to see if it could compete with some of the amazing pizza places located within a 10 mile vicinity. Setauket Pastaria has a cute ambiance, and warm feeling when you eat in their restaurant area, so if you are into that sort of stuff, you would enjoy your dining experience.

John’s Hero King Hallandale Beach

Whoa move over Captain and Tennille.  I haven’t had a Sicilian crust like this since they stopped slinging pies at great Roma Pizza 31st and Broadway which closed 20 years ago.

Now John’s is not a Pizzeria but an Italian Hero Shop transplanted from Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. John’s has only been open 4 months they just recently started serving Pizza.  They must import the dough along with the bread they ship daily.

Who cares if the pie was old and didn’t have enough sauce or cheese, the moisture and taste of the dough along with the bottom of the pie slightly burnt and crisp from the oil in the pan sent me to heaven….

The owner is still playing with the pie and is open to suggestions but you have got to try this!
