You say shoarma, I say shawarma – however you say it, pronounce it, this Middle Eastern/Mediterranean basin specialty has sure taken root all over the globe. (Wiki country-by-country reference/definitions). The word comes from Turkish origin, and today it is an all-encompassing description of a spicy meat sandwich served on a pita. It is usually served along with cucumber sauce and diced tomatoes. Many places offer it on a plate, instead of bread. Today’s variety comes in a wide variety of choices, including beef, lamb, chicken, goat, or mixed meats.

Borgata Casino Buffet Pizza Atlantic City
Atlantic City New Jersey. Sun, surf and sand. The Queen of Resorts. The boardwalk. Well, the Borgata is not on the Boardwalk so it doesn’t have all that AC has to offer. But it does have a very nice Buffet. What is wrong with me that among the roasted meats, elegant entrees and wonderful dishes, I find myself trying the pizza.

New York Pizza Amsterdam, Netherlands – The Original
You would have thought the proprietor of New York Pizza in Amsterdam would have also added the name “Ray’s” in the title of this pizza place somewhere, I would have. This way he could try to fool other people into actually think they were getting anything remotely relevant to NY pizza.

Francesco’s Pizza Huntington Long Island
Franceco’s Pizza in Huntington, LI goes into my pizza rolodex as one of the nicest places I have been to. Not nice because of the decor, but nice because of the attitude of the owner.

Two Amys Neopolitan Pizza Washington DC
On a recent trip to Washington DC, knowing my passion for pizza my friend said we had to try this new place. “It was great.” Now let me get something straight. I HATE hearing this. It never is. I didn’t come to DC for pizza. And my friend hadn’t even been there herself, so whose recommendation was this? But I had no choice. I was not a happy camper.

Guiseppe’s Sesame Seed Pizza Huntington Station Long Island
Guiseppe’s Pizza has been an icon in Huntington, back before they had migrant workers waiting on the corners for jobs. I recall going to Guiseppe’s as a teenager and loving the fact that the crust was made with Sesame Seeds.

Formaggio’s Pizza Lithia Florida
This review of Formaggio’s Pizza in Lithia, Florida is long overdue. My aunt has ordered two pies from this place every single time we’ve visited her for the last few years. I’ve eaten a ton of their pizza.
On a jaunt over to the Brandon area last week, we stopped in to see her once again and I picked up two pies (one pepperoni, one cheese) to take to her house.
A few disclosures:
1. I’ve never eaten this pizza on-site, in the restaurant, fresh from the oven. I’ve only ever had it as take out.
2. The area of Lithia is small. Tiny, even. The choice of quality pizza restaurants in this part of town is slim pickins.
3. Formaggio’s was running a special during that time where all 16 inch large pies were $8.88 a piece. A very decent deal.
All that said, it’s good pizza if you’re in the area and have a craving. I like the sweetness and consistency of their sauce, which wasn’t chunky but resembled standard marinara. I’ve found their pies to be a tad on the greasy side, especially the pepperoni, which can sometimes be a deal-breaker. If you like a light feeling in your stomach after eating pizza, this isn’t for you. I also wish their dough had a tad more salt, as I found it to be slightly sweet for my taste.

No one wants the take up the horrible task of following in the footsteps of a failure. That Pizza Place On Coral Way (great name by the way) has taken up this challenge and even dared to use the same phone number as its predecessor.
