Sabina’s Wood Fired Pizza Restaurant Saratoga Springs, NY

Perhaps if there was some extraterrestrial place to travel for a six week vacation off the planet earth, it would be called The Spa – Saratoga Springs to be specific. And yes, there is pizza in Saratoga Springs. When I arrived at Sabina’s Wood Fired Pizza, I had expected something interesting along the lines of other wood fired pizza ovens. My friend and I were greeted by a local who’s family owns and operates Panza’s, a fine italian restaurant. When I mentioned my desire to eat the best pizza in Saratoga Springs for the benefit of the readers of WorstPizza, he immediately pointed to his own family’s establishment. I will try to get to Panza’s before I leave tomorrow.

Tonight, it was Sabina’s Wood Fired Pizza. This little establishment is directly opposite the oldest and first thoroughbred race track in the U.S. Every year from the middle of July to the end of August, This town is booming and clamoring for entertainment, bar scenes from the Horseshoe and Siro’s, not to mention food and horse racing.

Martino’s Pizza Kings Park, NY

On a day when the stock market has seen its worst declines since the Flash Crash of May 6, 2010, and the epitaph of what could be the last year and the death of “Change 2008”, comes another disappointment in the form of pizza.

I first took notice of Martino’s Pizza Restaurant of Kings Park, NY a year ago as it stood opposite the Clayton Funeral Home, a place of temporary rest for a dearly departed friend. I’m sure if he were still alive and knew I was heading to Martino’s Pizza he probably would have told me where I could have found better.

It’s truly a shame as the place looks nice inside and probably is a big hit with the locals as well, but not with me.

Conca D’oro Pizza Hollywood, FL

There are many high quality pizzerias around the Hollywood area of South Florida. Many of which have already been highlighted here. Obviously, as in each city/town in Florida, there are some crappy places as well. Conca D’Oro Pizza is not one of those place. Passing by Conca D’oro Pizza in Downtown Hollywood the other day reminded me that I hadn’t been there to eat pizza there for quite some time. Actually, I think the last time I went there was close to seven years ago, and had a positively mediocre chicken cacciatore and have never been back….The same people that tell me the food is on a par with Mama Mia (not good) also tell me that they have great Sicilian pies.

Frantoni’s Pizza Williston Park, NY

Williston Park might actually be a mini Fort Knox of pizza on Long Island.

Just a couple of blocks from the East Williston train station, and right in the middle of a dense pizza geography lies the gem of a place called Frantoni’s Pizza. There are two locations. Williston Park and East Meadow (their full menu and sit down Italian restaurant). Is there any doubt how good they make their food and pizza? Well, right around the corner from their East Meadow spot was Villa Grande. Two pizza enter, one get eaten. Frantoni’s Pizza is still there blasting out pies and meatballs.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the same happened in Williston Park, where they are across the street from Angelina’s II on the same stretch.

Mamma Caruso’s Pizza Miami

The Brickell area of Miami has really turned around, and established itself as a night time destination. They have tons of great restaurants, and a vibe that rivals South Beach on some nights. Arriving way too early to meet a potential client, since I anticipated traffic that didn’t exist, I noticed Mamma Caruso’s Pizza as I was circling looking for a spot. This wasn’t easy since their sign from road only says pizza not their name.

Eventually I made my way back, pulled in, and decided to chance eating in Mamma Caruso’s Pizza, even though there wasn’t another patron in site. Upon walking in, the friendly staff welcomed me (en espanol) but it was nice just the same. Although I didn’t understand if I should seat myself and wait for a server (I was obviously hoping this wasn’t the case), or order from the counter and then sit and wait. Maybe I should even order from the counter and just wait for the food. I chose option 2 and it luckily turned out to be the right choice. I ordered a plain slice and waited at the table for the slice to come out of the oven.

Gaby’s Pizza Hollis Queens

Ohhhhh! Rated #1 by Rachel Ray? Having been born and raised in Fresh Meadows, Queens, its hard not to head south on Frannie Lew (that’s Francis Lewis Boulevard, as in Francis Lewis the American hero and Patriot), and head straight to Gaby’s Pizza for some great pizza every now and again.

Doug Heath and I were busy this past weekend gabbing about Gaby’s Pizza. It says something. Doug, arguable the greatest bounty hunter in NYC history should know a thing or two about finding things. But what makes Gaby’s Pizza in Fresh Meadows telling to guys like Doug and myself is that we grew up with great neighborhood pizzerias ourselves. Doug, living near Gino’s of Flushing (Kissena Blvd.) and me within a 30 second sprint to Brothers in Fresh Meadows.

Lenny’s Pizza Jamesport, Long Island Best Pizza

Approximately 90 miles from Port Richmond – Staten Island, and the great Denino’s Pizza (one of the best pizza I have ever tried) is the tucked away gem of a pizzeria in Jamesport – Long Island named Lenny’s. Lenny’s Pizza makes traveling out to Jamesport on the North Fork of Long Island worth it.

Here you will find another classic New York pizza chef named Jimmy who clearly understands how to make a thin crust New York style neopolitan pie. Lenny’s Pizza has a secret sauce that is sweet and spicy topped with a blended low fat and grande cheese that blows away the competition east of Wading River / Shirley and likely all of the North and South Fork territories. Its important to note that there are other places to grab a fine artesian pie in the Eastern portion of Long Island. But here, as is many the case, Lenny’s Pizza falls under the classification of New York style parlor pizza.

Abeetza Pizza Greenvale, NY

A small plate, a big slice, and a big taste. Cheech, ABEETZ!!!

And look out Ralph’s! Let the battle of the deep fried calzones begin. Abeetza  Pizza is a specialty pizza shoppe in Greenvale, NY, directly across the street from Grace’s Marketplace (one of the finest fresh food emporiums for the epicurious in NY).

Some places pretend to make specialty pizza, Abeetza Pizza hardly has to pretend – they are the real deal. Whether straight neopolitan, sicilian, grandma, grandpa, crispino, etc. you name it… its all good. Its very, very good.

Da Angelo Pizza Albertson, near Williston Park, Long Island

Tonight’s pizza tasting tour in New York is brought to you by the Mad Greek and the king of cheese Mozzweiser. This is the first review of the two places I had on this fine evening.  The second one will follow a day or so after this one.

As they say, it had to be done. 2000 calories later and it was done. First stop of this evenings tour was at the former Cugini Due (pronounced Coo-Genie Due-ay) of Williston Park, now Da Angelo Pizza (same family, same family recipe).

Gino’s of Kissena Pizza Flushing, NY

Abeetza eccellenza!!!

That’s the epiphany you will come to at first bite.

Of course when family tradition has been in the midst of making fine pizza for over a half a century and also linked to many notable locations like the famous Gaby’s Pizza on Hillside Avenue in Queen’s Village, its hard not to impress your customers.

Gino’s is a landmark in arguably the toughest of all locations to obtain critical acclaim – directly opposite Queens College, arguably the largest melting pot university in the U.S. For many years Gino’s and Regina Pizza, a mere 4 blocks away, were battling it out for local supremacy. Over time, Gino’s (my personal favorite of the two) came away like Secretariat winning the Belmont.
