Community Table Boca Raton Pizza

community_table_grand_opening.jpg

Boca Raton seems to be revered around the country as this beautiful paradise, with palm trees lining streets, and beautifully manicured lawns outside gorgeous homes and businesses. Most people would agree unless they have traveled on NW 2nd ave, also known as Boca Raton Blvd., between Glades Road and 20th Street. For some reason this block is full of decrepit plazas and buildings that never seem to get nicer. It is like the buildings were bought 50 years ago and just left in the state they were. G-d Forbid one of the landlords would get wise and redo the plazas so they could obtain more rent and beautify the street. (Pictured above at the grand opening and ribbon cutting are FAU Student Body President Michael Cepeda , Mayor Susan Haynie, Andrew Stellino (Owner), and Boca Raton Councilman Robert Weinroth.

Well one amazing thing happened on this street recently and it was the opening of a new casual eatery called Community Table. Although known for their $1 pizza slices and $8 pies, Community Table serves quite a bit more than that. They have tacos, hot dogs, paninis, salads and fresh homemade pasta. We couldn’t wait to go in and try out everything they had to offer.  (more…)

Manhattan Joe’s Pizza Boca Raton – Second Try

manhattan_joes_pizza.jpg

Many times I eat at a pizza place and although the slice tasted decent, it didn’t stand out in my mind. But since I am not a hardhead, I tend to listen to others when they recommend good pizza to me. There was a pizza place several buddies recommended to me on the Boca Raton/Delray Beach border in the Polo Shops called Manhattan Joe’s. I had eaten at Manhattan Joe’s Pizza when it first opened and I wasn’t blown away. You can read the review here.  I decided to try their pizza again since the people telling me were so passionate about it. (Yes you Jay & Adam)

This is one of the times I can admit I was wrong about a pizzeria. Although I cannot be sure that they listened to my previous advice, something seemed changed and I was quite happy that I gave Manhattan Joe’s a second try. This pizza was extremely good this time around.

Meatball Room Boca Raton, FL

Meatball_room_boca_raton.jpg

Since every place before it seemed to fail in the Regency Plaza in Boca Raton, a new group of owners decided to drop a ton of money and redo a restaurant that didn’t really need redoing and open a new Italian Restaurant called the Meatball Room. I had seen the coming soon sign for a while, but wasn’t sure they were opened until I saw my friend Jeff from Jeffeats.com posted about the restaurant and said I would love it. Since I trust his opinion, I decided to go try it out on opening night.

The Meatball Room was PACKED on opening night. Thankfully I made reservations before just heading over, or there probably wouldn’t be a spot for me until they closed. As I approached the hostess stand to give my name, I heard the regular Boca Raton snob remarks like “I live in Woodfield and you HAVE to seat me”, as well as “You won’t stay in business long if you don’t seat the locals first”. Such a nice sense of entitlement around this area.

Macaroni Grill Boca Raton Pizza

macaroni_grill_boca_raton.jpg

The Macaroni Grill changed their pizza a while back, hoping to sell more since the previous version was pretty hideous. They reached out to me several times asking if I would like to be a part of their focus group but I never heard back from them. The other day I realized that they did in fact change their pizza and decided to try a piece of my friends pie to see if anything changed for the better.

Unlike most of the pizza I eat, my buddy ordered his pizza at the Macaroni Grill with pepperoni. The Primo Pepperoni Pizza came with artisan pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, and parmesan cheese. I usually do not like the smell of Pepperoni so I managed to use a knife and fork and out out a slice that was plain.

Sal’s Pizza Garden Shops Boca Raton

sal's_pizza_boca_raton.jpg

Sal’s Pizza in Boca Raton has a couple of locations. The one we went to on this completely overcast and pouring rain kind of evening was in the Garden Shops. I haven’t ever really been a fan of any of the Sal’s pizzas that I have eaten so I wasn’t hopeful for anything different out of this location.

We got some Mozzarella Sticks and ordered an individual pie on the well done side each. Of course I got mine plain, since that is the best way to truly taste a pizza and compare it to other plain pies you have previous had. The guest I had joining me had meatball on his.

Woodfield Country Club Boca Raton Flatbread Pizza

woodfield_country_club_boca_raton.jpg

Recently Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, one of the areas premier clubs changed their menu. Some of the items I think were silly, but one of the new items is the Flatbread Pizza selection. Was invited there the other night from a friend who needed to kill his food minimum and had the opportunity to try it.

Like always, I ordered a plain one. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I haven’t really enjoyed the other pizzas they serve here. Outside of Boca West Country Club which has its own pizza oven, many of the Country Clubs around Boca Raton seem to fail when it comes to their food selection (outside of some Brunch).

Villa Rosano Italian Restaurant Boca Raton Pizza

villa_rosano.jpg

Back when the original owners were married, Cucina Rosano on the Boca/Delray border was one of my favorite places to eat. The food was very high priced, but it was quality and seldom disappointed. After the divorce the owner kept Villa Rosano out in North Western Boca Raton, and his ex wife kept Cucina Rosano, which she renamed Cucina Mio. Cucina Mio didn’t last long (my entire family actually got sick after eating there one night) but Villa Rosano is still opened. We decided to take a try of the pizza and pasta there the other day to see if it compared.

Villa Rosano in Boca Raton wasn’t too busy on the night we went in. We were placed in the back of the restaurant in what could be one of the most uncomfortable seating arrangements in Boca Raton. The tables were literally on top of each other as you can see in the photo below. We could barely get into our seats without hitting the table behind us, and could barely sit with all the chairs smooshed into the small area. What the heck were they thinking there?

Paolo’s of Boca Raton Pizza

paolos_of_boca.jpg

A new place decided to take a chance with the store front that used to house Authentic Brooklyn Pizza. For starters I was happy to see that someone finally put up a sign in this location. The previous owner for some reason never wanted to spend the money and brand himself with one.

My friend Barry suggested I tried this place and called it the best pizza he had tried in Boca Raton. Since Barry never called me with such an outrageous claim like this before, I rushed on over to Paolo’s of Boca Raton the first chance I could.

Tony Dell’s Pizza Boca Raton

tony_dells.jpg

When I first moved to Boca Raton, friends would tell me I needed to try this place out in western Boca Raton called Tony Dell’s, and if I did I would find a place that reminded me of Little Italy in New York City. They described it as the sort of hole in the wall Italian Restaurant that opens when it wants, and has people lining up to eat there. I drove past it a couple of times and it appeared empty, which it turns out on many occasions it was. Tony Dell’s had very strict and odd hours, so the place appeared closed more than it was open.

That didn’t stop my friend Rob from swearing that we would have to go together and that I would have some of the best pizza in Boca Raton. Like many plans with Rob, excuses came and we never got the opportunity to go experience Tony Dell’s before it was put up for sale.  Recently a new owner took over, regulated the hours and decided to take a try at producing some quality Italian Food in Western Boca Raton.

Spadini’s Pizza Boca Raton, Mizner Park

spadinis_pizza_boca_raton.jpg

It didn’t take long for Mizner Park Pizza to wave the white flag, and sell the pizzeria. The previous owner Mike was a nice enough guy, but just didn’t seem to possess all the necessary skills for running a pizza joint in such a competitive area. For those who ate there a few times, it was pretty evident that the place probably didn’t have long to survive.

A couple of months ago I heard the location was for sale in Boca Raton, but wondered who would buy this doomed spot, and if they would continue offering average pizza at hefty prices and hope to take away business from the other half dozen or so pizzerias located in the immediate area. Well my questions were answered when Spadini’s Pizza opened up shop and decided to try to make this a profitable location for a change.
