Giovanni’s Pizza Boca Raton

My New Year’s Resolution for 2009 was to end the year with an empty email inbox.  I started the year with 1,000 emails and get about 200 legit emails a day, so this was no easy task.  While some emails only require seconds to respond or delete, most take 2-3 minutes of work.  Some obviously take much longer.  These are usually very labor intensive work emails, and I can’t complain about them because usually they result in me making money.  It is my job after all.

Augy’s Pizza Boca Raton Has Original Owners Back

augyspizza.jpgJust heard from a credible source that Augy’s Pizza in Boca Raton, has the original owners back.  About three years ago, the family that ran Augy’s (they also own the plaza) sold the restaurant to a family out of Long Island.  Well I guess business started to go downhill, and the original family repurchased the store and are trying to turn it around and bring it back to its original glory.

Boca Pizza and Sandwiches Boca Raton

boca_pizza.jpgboca_subs.jpgYet another disappointment…Went back to Boca Pizza the other day, and ordered a slice.  From my previous review of this place, you probably know that I found the pizza to be pretty damn good.  It had a different taste to it then any other pie I have found locally.  This turned many off, but I found the uniqueness in it, and enjoyed it.  The slice I had today was quite awful!

Mr. Pronto Pizza Restaurant Boca Raton

mrprontopizza.jpgburntcrust.jpgOn our way to buy some holiday gifts down in Coconut Creek, we passed by the spot that used to house Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza, and realized it had reopened under a new name.  Mr. Pronto Pizza Restaurant did some minor redesigning, applied some ugly color paint on the walls, and took down some of the photos that once adorned the walls, and seem to be taking a gamble at making this location work.

Table 42 Pizza – Where Coal Mine Used To Be

table42pizza.jpgtable42_oven.jpgWe were personally invited to try the new Table 42 that recently took the place of Coal Mine Pizza in downtown Boca Raton.  Although Table 42 still has the same owners and managers, they decided to give the place a face-lift and change the menu around.  Table 42 was named after one of the tables in the corner as you enter.  Now table 42 is a huge living room style table that can comfortably accommodate up to 16.

Immediately upon entering Table 42, my eyes were drawn to this beautiful white marble coal burning pizza oven.  Previously Coal Mine Pizza had a brick facade around their oven, and this subtle change added some modern flair to the restaurant.

A Last Eat At Coal Mine Pizza in Boca Raton Before it Becomes Table 42

coalminepizza.jpgCoal Mine Pizza was eager to improve its standing on WorstPizza.com, and they certainly impressed me, perhaps more than anyone else at our table. You see Coal Mine Pizza will be closing down (it already technically has) and re-opening as Table 42 on December 10th.

Starting with their margherita pizza, I found it to be light and crisp, cooked evenly and topped with basil so fresh, I’d wondered if it had just been picked from the plant. The basil was aromatic and added a refreshing minty-lemongrass herbal flavor that wasn’t as appreciated as much by my basil-blaspheming cohorts.

The “videl” pizza, topped with sausage and ricotta cheese was another variety I enjoyed. The sausage was so finely crumbled that it melted in my mouth with the ricotta and didn’t upset the balance of the slice as so many normally-heavy toppings do.

The truffle pizza ($40 for a personal size!) was another nice surprise. Rich and buttery in both flavor and texture, I’d order it again if not for the price. It may be an item targeted to more upscale clientele in the area, but I think a very similar flavor can be accomplished if topped with less costly mushrooms.

Finally, I find myself as the lone voice of dissension in regards to the white pizza. Unlike my pie-munching pals, I wasn’t crazy about this one. Heavy on garlic, it tasted less like a pizza and more like a flattened garlic roll. I’d love it as a crouton-style side to accompany a pasta/seafood dish, perhaps seared scallops or shrimp scampi. As a pizza, I doubt I could want more than a small slice or two.

Coal Mine Pizza did a wonderful job and I’d gladly return. 6/8 slices, with points included for cleanliness, freshness and friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Villagio Restaurant Pizza Boca Raton Mizner Park

villagios.jpgvillagio_pizza.jpgMartin wanted me to try the pizza at the new Italian place in Mizner Park called Villagio’s.  This appears to be the same owners as Il Bellagio in West Palm Beach, based upon the menu but I have no confirmed that as of yet.

The pizza was quite undercooked but the manager came by and made things right. The second pie was fantastic.  It was cooked properly with some fresh cheese, light amount of sauce and crispy thin crust. I know this seems like a short review, but I was planning on going back to give it a proper one. This time around I was a bit too tainted to give a full unbiased account.

The second pizza was actually pretty good so I will score it high and just try to save my comments for an additional time.

I will give Villagio Restaurant 6 out of 8 slices.
