Star Tavern Pizza in Orange, New Jersey

Star Tavern in Orange, New Jersey is one of the better known places in the State for pizza. It has been in business for over 60 years, and is often found in the “best of” lists published from time to time. I have been there a number of times, and always order a plain cheese pie, which I did for this review. I wanted to see if this really was World Famous Pizza quality, or just something they put on their website.
The pizza is definitely above average. Thin crust, with a nice balance of sauce and cheese. The sauce is mildly spicy, just enough to give the pizza flavor, but not so much that it overwhelms the pie. On the down side, the pie is a bit on the greasy side, and the edges in places are sometimes burnt. I know this is a subjective type of review because many people enjoy their pizza on the greasy side and others actually prefer the crust to be well done like the pizza was this day at Star Tavern. So if you are one of these types of folks, you might have enjoyed the pizza a whole lot better than I did.
Overall, this is a very good pizza. It’s not brick oven, but for a gas oven, it is as good as you will find in New Jersey.
**Note that you can order whole pies only, no slices, and the parking lot is small, and fills up quickly during lunch hours. You might want to plan ahead and get their early or after the crowds subside. On the flip side, this is an obvious good sign that people enjoy their pizza.
Star Tavern in Orange, NJ gets a very solid 6 slices. If you are in the neighborhood, it’s worth a trip there.
