Safeway Frozen Pizza – All Pizzas Deserve a Review
Slice Rating
Safeway (and Von’s, Randalls, and Tom Thumb Markets) have a number of quality in house branding concepts, among them is the “Select” line of frozen meals.
I picked up the “Primo Italian Meat Ultra Thin Crust Pizza”, which includes toppings of capicola, crumbled Italian sausage, and Genoa Salami, covered with a blend of Mozzarella, Parmesan, and Romano Cheeses.
The pie weighs in at a mere 14.25 ounces, due to the thin crust, and retails for about $6 at our local stores.
Cooking instructions are center rack at 400 for 9-11 minutes.
The pie looks fairly appealing when taken from the box and shrink wrap, those large slices of meat, tho paper thin, have a lure for me.
After 10 minutes in the pre-heated oven, the pie qualifies as “done”, but I like it a little browner, so after this stage, I put it under the broiler for two minutes.
The crust was indeed ultra thin, and had a nice cracker crunch to the outer edges, while remaining chewy enough on the interior. The meat did have some flavor, especially the sausage chunks, which, while plentiful, I wished were larger crumbles. Regular readers know my frozen pizza of choice is California Pizza Kitchen’s Sicilian, but this Safeway product is a worth competitor. I’ll do it again sometime.
Safeway Frozen Pizza gets 4 out of 8 slices in the frozen category!
