The other day I headed over to meet my co-worker for lunch in the Coconut Creek Promenade at Scarfones Coal Fired Pizza. We have been eying this pizza place for the past month and finally decided it was time to take the plunge. I opened the door and wasn’t sure if I was in the right place. When you walk in there is a full bar and lounge, gorgeous industrial ceilings, and hip modern décor. This was definitely a unique pizza place, never have I been to one quite like it. The menu had good selection of pies to choose from such as their Healthy Flatbread Pizza or Whole Wheat Pizza. But I wanted to know what this place was made of. Traditional Cheese for me Please.

Before our Small 12” Cheese pizza arrived, I made a quick trip to the bathroom. Again, I was pleasantly surprised with the standards Scarfone’s seemed to carry throughout the entire restaurant. I hoped it carried over into their kitchen. I returned to the table and didn’t have to wait long to quiet my hungry stomach. The waiter dropped off the pizza and we jumped right in. I was very excited to try this “upscale” pizza.

At first bite, I knew the pizza was way too paper thin, and definitely not crispy enough considering they claim it to be “Crispy Pizza”. Pizza is supposed to have substance in thickness of crust and how crispy it is to hold the sauce, cheese, and other ingredients.

The sauce had a nice sweet flavor that complimented the perfectly melted fresh mozzarella cheese. The fresh cheese was my favorite part! But the sauce could use some thickening as it continued to cascade off the side of the slice between bites.

I kept eating, hoping I would like the next bite more than the last, this was not the case. All the pizza was gone and I was still hungry. After eating four slices!! Where was the rest of the pizza?!?!?! My opinion: Scarfones needs to put as much time and effort into their pizza, as they do with the décor. When that happens, I would love to give it another try.

Overall I give Scarfones a 4 out of 8 slices.
