Sabina’s Wood Fired Pizza Restaurant Saratoga Springs, NY

Perhaps if there was some extraterrestrial place to travel for a six week vacation off the planet earth, it would be called The Spa - Saratoga Springs to be specific. And yes, there is pizza in Saratoga Springs. When I arrived at Sabina's Wood Fired Pizza, I had expected something interesting along the lines of other wood fired pizza ovens. My friend and I were greeted by a local who's family owns and operates Panza's, a fine italian restaurant. When I mentioned my desire to eat the best pizza in Saratoga Springs for the benefit of the readers of WorstPizza, he immediately pointed to his own family's establishment. I will try to get to Panza's before I leave tomorrow.
Tonight, it was Sabina's Wood Fired Pizza. This little establishment is directly opposite the oldest and first thoroughbred race track in the U.S. Every year from the middle of July to the end of August, This town is booming and clamoring for entertainment, bar scenes from the Horseshoe and Siro's, not to mention food and horse racing.
Sabina's Wood Fired Pizza has been a family restaurant and tradition since 1912 and serving the Saratoga Springs faithful for as long as time can remember. Tonight they served two more in the Mad Greek and the Mad Hungarian. We ordered the Tomato, Basil & Fresh Mozzarella large pie - well done. It was more to the artesian end of the spectrum and close to the style and crust of Grimaldi's and other wood fired pizza from NYC.
Sabina's makes a nice pizza. But nice pizza and nice guys finish last, as do nice horses. In the horse race of pizza's, I would recommend the pizza at Sabina's to fill a spot on your cultural and historical card when visiting Saratoga, but I wouldn't put it high on the list of knock your socks off pizza.
I noted the stretchy doughy style one might find tearing a piece of nan in half at an indian restaurant. While the mozzarella was nice and fresh and stringy, and was balanced with some nicely cubed tomato and basil for garnish, it couldn't power this historical pie past a little above average rating.
Sabina's Pizza in Saratoga Springs gets 5 out of 8 slices. Next time I'll try their traditional pie for a re-review. For now, the next pizza out of the starting gate at the Spa will be Panza's.
