About a month or so ago I was at a street fair in St. James, Long Island. I had heard about a pizza place nearby called Nicky G’s, but never had the opportunity to try it. Nicky G’s is somewhat unique when it comes to pizza since their crust is made out of garlic knots. Yup, you heard me right. Their hopefully tasty pizza comes equipped with garlic knots built in. (not garlic rolls Suzanne).
Although Nicky G’s Pizza in St. James was jamming, because of all the attendees at the street fair, I didn’t let that stop me from grabbing a slice. Although the staff was extremely busy, I gotta say….they made me feel like I was the only one there when it came time to pay. The lady behind the cash register didn’t let the stress get to her at all, and she could be a stellar example for those pizza employees who get all flustered when you ask them a question while they ring you up.
I couldn’t wait for my slice of Garlic Knot pizza to come out at Nicky G’s in St. James. Staring at the pizza in the display case made me so curious how it would taste, and furthermore, how it would hold up when I picked it up to take my first bite. My slice arrived a little undercooked, which bothered me a little. Since it was probably their busiest day of the year, I will hold back on a tongue lashing here (for now) and wait until I go back up and try it again to see if it is a consistent problem.
The cheese was average and was applied over a nice tasting sauce. The crust tasted decent as well but I just couldn’t control myself and bit into the garlic knot on the crust. It was a pleasant flavor and brought a unique experience to my taste buds.
Nicky G’s Pizza has only a small seating area, so this isn’t the fancy type of place you would take your extended family for a meal. I will definitely be going back again to try out a fresh pie.
Nicky G’s Pizza in St. James, NY gets 5 out of 8 slices.
