I was sitting at my desk at work when one of our vendors brought in pizza from a local pizza place, DellaVentura’s Restaurant & Pizza. I used to know the family who owned DellaVentura’s but they sold the place a few years back. Everyone I work with swarmed the pies, but at work when the food is free, this normally the case.
The first thing I noticed was that the slices were cut unevenly. Some slices were tremendous while others were like the size of 1/3 of a slice. I would imagine this is not the case if you go in and order it by the slice. The crust was a tad bit doughy for my liking. The center was undercooked but it still managed to hold up the contents of the pizza.
My first slice was a pepperoni slice. Pepperoni usually isn’t my topping of choice because of the oil the pepperoni secretes when cooked but I have to say this slice was delicious. The sauce was tasty. Usually the sauce is what kills the pizza for me but this sauce was not overly bitter or sweet. It had a great balance. Although I’m not an expert on cheeses, this cheese was fresh and had to be a high quality cheese because it was good.
My second slice was a sausage slice and it was also really good. The sausage had really good flavor, as if it were cooked there as opposed to being bought pre-cooked and pre-sliced. The crust was very filling and after two slices of pizza I was full.
So, both slices were delicious, the toppings were better than I expected. The sauce and cheese were right on the money. The only negative was the crust, which in my opinion was very doughy and filling. The crust was also undercooked and there was a lot of flour on the bottom. I definitely don’t like when you can feel the flour under the pizza.
According to their website, DellaVentura’s was voted #1 Pizza in Broward County. I don’t know if I’d say they are #1 but I definitely enjoyed it and would eat there again.
I’d give it a solid 6 out of 8 slices. I look forward to trying some other topping and maybe the Sicilian slice in the future.
