King Umberto’s in Elmont, NY holds the top spot on my list for best pizza. It’s a mandatory stop whenever I’m on Long Island, and the pizza is almost always excellent. One of the factors that sets King Umberto’s apart from the others is the variety of pizza that’s always available by the slice, regardless of the time of day.
And it’s not a variety of toppings on the pizzas either, each one is drastically different from the next. On this visit, I decided against getting a plain cheese slice and instead got three different more exotic slices.
First was a stuffed vegetable slice. It was filled with mozzarella, ricotta, broccoli rabe, and spinach. I really wish I could find this type of pizza in more places down in Florida, especially by the slice. Sbarro seems to be the only store that consistently has this type of pizza, but it’s blown away by Umberto’s.
Next came a slice topped with fresh mozzarella, sauce, and basil. This was the closest I had to a traditional slice for the night, and was also my least favorite. I love freshly sliced mozzarella like this, but it didn’t do much for me tonight. It really didn’t have all that much flavor and I think next time I’ll go with a plain cheese slice instead of this.
Finally, for my third slice, I had one of my all time favorite types of pizza. The crust was really thin and if I remember correctly, is somehow spinach based. The sauce was spicy and a little bit chunky (which I normally don’t go for). Top that with various cheeses and basil, and you get an amazing slice of pizza.
One thing I’d also like to point out is how colorful pizza is from King Umberto’s. Traditional plain cheese pizza is great, but sometimes it’s nice to get a box of pizza that looks like what I got on this particular night. Not only does it taste good, it looks good too!
There are plenty of restaurants using Umberto in their name on Long Island, but out of all of them that I have tried, King Umberto’s definitely is the king.
