Nicky’s Pizza Restaurant White Plains New York

The notion that New York pizza is somehow better than the pizza anywhere else is not necessarily true. You can’t walk into just any place and expect to get the slice of your life. I grew up in Staten Island, NY which has some of the best pizza around, including DeNinos; but the majority of places are average at best.
I instinctively knew this as we would often pass five or more pizzerias to get to a specific place. Living in South Florida has dulled me of this fact. I lament not being able to get a good NY slice. So on a recent trip to White Plains, NY for a family wedding, I let logic out the window and went to the first place I found. And I was excited to do so. Without any research I ended up at Nicky’s. I didn’t finish the slice. 5 bites and I threw it out.
What happened to NY pizza??? Oh yeah, it is specific places Denino’s in Staten Island, Patsy’s in Harlem, Spumoni Gardens and Di Fara in Brooklyn. For every one of these “greats” there are a hundred average places. But for every “average” joint, it takes a handful of sub-par places to create the average. And that is what I found on this cold night on Mamaroneck Ave. A bland, rubbery, worthless slice. The cold hard reality that good pizza is made, not born. It doesn’t take NY water or a NY pedigree to make pizza. If it did, then how do you explain the great pizzas of New Haven or Tacconelli’s in Philadelphia? No, just being in NY isn’t enough. I can’t wait to get back to Florida and get some good pizza. In my opinion this gets 0 out of 8 slices.
