Well, we finally took a trip to New Haven, just for the pizza. Both Sally's and Pepe's were huge disappointments. I have to assume the folks touting these places as "Great!" are those that grew up (or went to college) enjoying them, and love them based on those associations. Living in Maryland, I hear folks praising the local chain Ledo's (which, actually, tastes kind of similar to the New Haven type, now that I think about it), and I know it's because they just don't know any better.

As an "outsider" in New Haven, I found them totally unremarkable. In all honestly, I would not order either of these for delivery, much less make a special trip for them. At least at Pepe's we did not have to wait. At Sally's we waited 4 hours (yes, seriously) outside, and then sat inside another half hour waiting for our order to be taken. These folks clearly don't care about customer service (or perhaps it's just that we were not "regulars." We did see others just walk right in, bypassing the line, so there must be varying levels of service.) We wanted to try it, and we did.

I realize I might be falling into the same bias, I grew up in New York, so I think pizza there is best. . . Nah, it really *is* better there! :)

Agree about totonnos! But patsys I disagree on. Arturos is better. Yes maybe Lombardis is in top 10 for NYC but not if you include 5 boroughs. You should send me in your review, I will publish to show your opinion.

TOTONNOS IN BROOKLYN IS THE BEST BAR NONOE!!! PATSYS IS # 2 AND LOMBARDIS IS SOMEWHERE IN THE TOP 7. YOUR COMPARISON OF LOMBARDIS TO PAPPA JOHNS IS IDIOTIC AND LAUGHABLE PAPPA JOHNS USES KETCHUP GARBAGE CHEESE HORRIBLE OIL ETC AND THERE DOUGH IS...... LAMBARDIS WEATHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT AND REGARDLESS HOW THEY SO CALLED PUMP THEM OUT STILL USES HOMEMADE MOZZ- EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL AND SAN MARZAN TOMATOES THE ONLY THING I AGREE WITH YOU ON IS JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A COAL OVEN DOES NOT MEAN THE PIZZA WILL BE GREAT. AS FAR AS UNEDUCATED YOUR COMMENT COMPARING AN INSTITUTION LIKE LOMBARDIS USING ALL HOME MADE TOP OF THE LINE INGREDIENTS COMPARED TO PAPPA JUNKS I MEAN JOHNS SPEAKS FOR YOUR INTELLIGENCE THEN AGAIN YOU ARE PROBABLY ONE OF THOSE WANNA BE'S WHO LIVES IN WEST BOCA RATON TRYING TO KEEP UPWITH THE JONES A KNOW IT ALL TYPICAL BOCA

Danny, one thing I know is pizza. If you truly think that Lombardi's which pumps out pizzas like papa johns nowadays, is authentic neopolitan, I am not sure my readers should qualify your comment as anything but uneducated. If you told me Sally's Piiza or Pepes in New Haven were authentic then I would certainly agree with you. If there was a matza ball pizza I would rank it! What other places do you consider "authentic neopolitan" or "true coal oven". Keep in mind, just having a coal oven does not make it good!

Reading this review and others on your site, I've come to realize that what you hold as your standard is not an authentic pizza. I'm sure you know *your* best when you taste it, I have no doubt you know what you like, but it's not true Neopolitan pizza. That's what my standard is, so now I'm not surprised I disagree with your reviews. You enjoy yours, I'll enjoy mine ...
